Top 10 Albums

Top 10 Albums

Happy New Year one and all. Here's one for the boards...

Top 10 trad albums of all time (in your own opinion of course).

(what's sad is my recording collection is so small, I couldn't even name more than 10 offhand. I did get "Contentment is Wealth" for X-mas though, so I'm on my way.)

Re: Top 10 Albums

Aargh. Impossible for me to answer definitively. Possibly a Bothy Band cd, maybe the two Paddys on Doublin'. Planxty would have to be there somewhere, I think. The Chieftains for historical value. Possibly the Matt Malloy session album for session recordings.

After that, it's all a toss up. So many recordings, so many reasons why there are so many "top" recordings...

P.S.

Oh, and that Milestone one for historical value as well, which covers a lot of the older recordings...but so many of those as well...

Re: Top 10 Albums

To add some more classic recordings,

"Molloy/ Brady/ Peoples" (flute, fiddle, guitar)
Maired Ni Mhaonaigh & Frankie Kennedy "Ceol Aduaigh" (flute, fiddle, vocal)
James Kelly, Paddy O'Brien, and Daithi Sproule "Traditional Music of Ireland" (fiddle, box, guitar)
Mary MacNamara "Traditional Music from East Clare" (concertina with fiddles)
John Carty & Brian McGrath "The Cat that Ate the Candle" (banjo, piano)

I still haven't got them, but "Noel Hill & Tony Linnane" and the whistle player Mary Bergin's "Feadoga Stain" should be add to the list.

We actually discussed this topic several times. Take a look at these: http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display.php/5641; http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display.php/8114

Re: Top 10 Albums

Is it me? Or did Jeremy delete the film stuff? If this disapears, I'll know. Fair enough.

Re: Top 10 Albums

I looked at those threads and I was surprised no one mentioned the Andy Irvine and Paul Brady record or the Liberty Tapes, which are two of the best records I've ever heard in any genre. Also De Danaan!

Re: Top 10 Albums

where can I get a hold of that Mairead/Frankie album?

Hrrm.. .
1) Paddy Carty, (despite the banjo)
2) David Power, My love is in America
3) Lunasa I (flame away! it's still brilliant)
4) Mary bergin, FS I & II
5) Matt Molloy, Heathery Breeze
6) The Poozies, Infinite Blue (a huge stretch on the "trad" requirement, granted)
7) Leo Rowsome, King of the pipers
8) 78th Frasier Highlanders, Live in Ireland
9) Canny/Hayes/third player/4th player - A historic recording of trad Irish music
10) Chieftains Live

Paul O'Shaughnessy and Paul McGratten- Within a Mile of Dublin
Andy Irvine and Paul Brady
Tommy Peoples and Daithi Sproule - the Iron Man
