Willie Kelly is a teacher in Northern NJ. If you are interested I could get you his contact info.

Hey Tara,

There are a number of great fiddlers reachable from Central Jersey. What town are you in?

Peace,
Ed

Re: Lessons in Central New Jersey

Tara, is Cental New Jersey very far from South New Jersey? My teacher, Kathy DeAngelo is in S. New Jersey--in Voorhees. Email me and I'll get you her contact info.

Re: Lessons in Central New Jersey

theres plenty of people in toms river and monmouth county, not to sure who gives lessons though. if you check out one of the rare sessions in the area theres bound to be someone.

Re: Lessons in Central New Jersey

I live in Somerville, but I'm willing to drive a bit for lessons. Andee, I think I'm near Voorhees. Is that near New Brunswick? Thanks for all your help!
Tara

Re: Lessons in Central New Jersey

Willie Kelly is up in Boonton, New Jersey just off Route 287 which a fairly easy drive up north and back from Somerville.
He is a fantastic musician and wonderful teacher with a lovely Clare/Galway style of playing.

Voorhees is down in Southern New Jersey and a Philadelphia suburb though Kathy is a wonderful teacher and musician as well.

Re: Lessons in Central New Jersey

Hey Tara,

Boonton is about a thirty minute drive from Somerville, given traffic and all. Willie Kelly will be the guest host of the IAANJ session in Rockaway Township on Friday, Jan 13. You can talk to him there. There is also Veronica McNamara in Chatham but I am not certain she is taking on students. Colleen Settle (aka Scarry) is a brilliant player and may also be available for lessons although she is in Orange County, NY but is down this way sometimes. There are also a number of local fiddlers that show up at the session on Sunday afternoons at St. James Gate in Maplewood, not too far from Somerville either. You may be able to hook up with a tutor there. Tom Dunne, a brilliant fiddler mentored by that great County Kerry fiddler Paddy Cronin, is one of the hosts of the St. James Gate session.

Good luck in your search and I hope to see you at one of the local sessions soon.

Peace,
Ed

Re: Lessons in Central New Jersey

Tara, like Ed said come to the IAANJ session on the 13th, this is one of your only chances to see Willie in a Session as I hear he doesn't go to many, although he was at one of the IAANJ sessions in November, that was when Tom Dunne was hosting who I don't think does lessons, but I know Willie does. Hope to see you at IAANJ even if you just come to watch.

Re: Lessons in Central New Jersey

Willie is amazing! come to the session on 1/13 and hear what he's doing. He's worth the trip to Boonton. Rose Conway Flanagan teaches up in Pearl River NY, that's a trek but may be worth it.

Re: Lessons in Central New Jersey

Is Tom the gentlemen with the beard. They run a nice session there plus I think it is one of the better Irish pubs in NJ.

You may also want to check out the Irish fiddle events at Mo's Fiddles mofiddles.com. I found a teacher from there last year.
Does anyone of any teachers in the Union County area?

Re: Lessons in Central New Jersey

As I mentioned I am looking for a fiddle teacher in the Union County New Jersey area and am willing to travel 45 minutes or so.

Boonton wouldn't be bad as I have friends up there do you have Willie Kelley's contact info?

Any other suggestions would be welcome.

I am adult with no prior music experience who just started and can play one horrible Britches Full of Stitches and and an even worse Walls of Liscarroll.

Thanks.
