It was composed by the great G S Maclennan (and, according to Jack Campin, named by his son). The reference is found at Jack's site: http://www.purr.demon.co.uk/jack/Music/McLennan.abc
but alas, the tune is not.
It is a GS McLennan tune. I did some research on this a while back. McLennan a pipe major (who also composed Jig of Slurs, The Little Cascade etc) was in the Gordon Highlanders regiment of the British army. He was based in Portlaoise (then Maryborough) Ireland from 1919-1921 and named some of the tunes he composed after local landmarks - Shanbally Castle was located near Clogheen in South Co Tipperary. He also wrote a tune called The Kilworth Hills which are located just a few miles away in North East Cork. There was a large army camp there at the time. More info on Shanbally Castle here http://ireland.iol.ie/~clogheen/history/Shanbally/ShanballyCastle.htm
Thanks a million for that link Nigel! I also found a tune there called Dalnahassaig which may refer to the town of Ballinhassig in Co. Cork in which a number of violent clashes took place during 1921. Speculation I know but interesting stuff all the same, and as posted on another thread there are a large amount of Scottish pipe-tunes that have been absorbed into the Sliabh Luachra repertoire.
If I remember rightly, G S Maclennan was stationed in Ireland for a while, hence the appearance of the odd Irish name in his canon. I'm no expert on the man, but a great admirer of his tunes.
Shanbally Castle by Capercaillie
Shanbally Castle by Capercaillie
I can't find info on this tune anywhere. Does anyone know if it has another title?
