Re: Tunes with alternative names of "comic" value.
At last night's session, they'd just gotten done playing "O'Farrell's Farewell to Limerick." One of the players commented "That tune's always a fun time!" At which point I tried to snort the beans I was eating out of my nose with laughter! Look at some of the "alternate" names for that tune here, and you'll see what I mean.
Re: Tunes with alternative names of "comic" value.
Oh the Britches Full of Stitches is almost always referred to as "the Britches". This wouldn't be understandable unless one realized the amount of loathing that is inserted into those two words.
And yes, I like Varnish Me Foreskin. It's a terrible way to go, but it's a beautiful finish.
Re: Tunes with alternative names of "comic" value.
A Maid To Ride
Over the Floor to Maggie (80s political)
The Kinky Nora (this is what an old lady in the Exile really thought it was called)
The feck Santas (jig or reel- they only come once a year, and then it's down the chimney)
The Tame Englishman
I really liked the Kid on the Mountain Bike though...
Re: Tunes with alternative names of "comic" value.
We play them as "that Jewish set"
Banish my Foreskin & The Yid on the Mountain.
and the halfway rude version The Nine Points of Rodgery
I also sometimes play a charming 18th century minuet that I learned from my daughter's piano practice, called The Duchess of Westmorlands Delight.
Now known as The Cumberland Sausage.
Anything of title unknown that becomes popular becomes either:
O'Carolan's Trip to the Chippy, or
Hold the Candle Steady While I Shave the Chickens Upper Lip.
I'm so glad that none of these, or any of the others, are in any way rude. That would never do.
Tunes with alternative names of "comic" value.

I always thought that most tunes started off with rude names that get cleaned up later on.
Most of mine do anyway.

I only remember a tune we used to play but didn't know the name of. Only that it was a polka from Finland, so we just called it The Finnish Polka.
For some reason we only played it at the end of the session.
