Fiddle pick ups

Fiddle pick ups

I know it's been discussed before, and I did a search, but still need a bit of help. I'm looking to change to a different pick up for my fiddle...the one I use connects to the bridge, causing the fiddle to sound extremely flat. What company/companies make the mic pick up (the one that sits above the bridge/strings)? I checked "lavalier" but didn't see what I was looking for. Any help would be appreciated...

Lots of threads on this topic--here's a good example:

Re: Fiddle pick ups

This link is on the thread mickray posted, but it's worth repeating. I haven't played through one of these, but they seem like the most logical solution to the fiddle/mic dilemma.

Re: Fiddle pick ups

i've been using a one of those for a while now, and it's very nicely put together and makes a lovely sound.

the only real down side is that it is just another microphone, so in a noisy environment (and in particular in a boomy room) feedback is still an issue.
i usually have to get the monitors pointed away from me directly too.

i love the fact that i can attach it so easily to the fiddle without cluttering up the fiddle for normal (e.g. session) use.

one thing to be aware of is that an inadvertant tug on the lead can cause it to be unseated slightly, causing the sound to change (although once aware of this, it's not a problem at all).

the only other thing i'd mention is that for such a small microphone, it sure does have a big case! bombproof it may be, but small it ain't... i'd like to see a version that i could fit into my fiddle case.

Re: Fiddle pick ups

I use an akg that "kind of " clips onto my saddle. I dunno the model # but it has a gooseneck and I think its probably meant for sax or something. I never have problems with feedback and I play with some loud guys. If I decide to play professionally again, I'll prob'ly buy the RIML.BIZ one Will is advocating... Don't get any more pickups. They sound crap and flatten the ambient tone as you mentioned. No reason to put up with that.

Re: Fiddle pick ups

I've just got an Audio Technica Pro 35x. I've heard it used by many other people and in all cases it has sounded great and they've told me that they've had no problems with feedback. I'll have my first gig with it on Sunday so I'll come back and post how it sounds and behaves then.

Previous to that I was using the ATM35, almost the same model as the Pro 35x, but with a preamp. This fed back a ridiculous amount and used to drive me and our sound engineers mad.

Thanks guys! I'll be purchasing one very soon, and I'm sure will be much happier with my sound.

Re: Fiddle pick ups

I suggest you try a K&K pickup. Check them out at www.kksound.com
