Fleadh Nua

Fleadh Nua

Hi, everybody!

I'll be visiting Ireland for the 1st time in May. For one week of the 2 week holiday we've rented a house near Doolin. I just discovered that during that same week is the Fleadh Nua in Ennis, not far away.

Any advice regarding this festival?

Keith

Re: Fleadh Nua

Long time since I was there, but I always found it delightful. I used to go with my wife and daughter and others, for the set dancing, but there were great music-only sessions there too, and the whole thing was friendly and laid-back. If it's still as good as it was, and I have no reason to doubt that, then I would highly recommend it.

If you fancy a dance yourself, check out the program at Cois na hAbhna (http://www.c7r.com/cce/).

Hope you have a great time

Try lining your stomach with Milk of Magnesia on the first day!

Re: Fleadh Nua

Keith, It used to be a 4 day weekend thing but has recently extended to a full seven days (officially as some people often stay on for a few more days playing during the following week!). The theme for 2006 will be celebrating "The Fleadh Down in Ennis" which commemorates the great 1956 event immortalised in Robbie McMahon's great song. This gives lots of scope for ceol agus craic with a few of the 1956 veterans still here (examples are Gerry Lynch, Kilfenora, Chris Droney, Bellharbour and the great Robbie himself!) plus lots of their descendants. I haven't seen a programme yet but the format will be the same as other years with a series of free lunchtime concerts throughout the week, afternoon session workshops and nightly Fleadh Club sessions. As things build up towards the weekend there are céilí/set dances every night from Thursday onwards, free street entertainment Friday, Saturday and Sunday not to mention music workshops and set dancing classes. All you need to bring with you is plenty of stamina!!

Checking out the site at http://fleadhnua.com/ (although not yet updated for 2006) will give you some idea of the activities on offer.
