The Harp Bar, West Berlin 1981. Our group 'Anna Liffey Folk' were doing a regular gig there when my future wife walked in.
As we were playing a gig, as opposed to a session, perhaps that doesn't count McGregor, but we were playing ITM at the time & we did invite musicians up to play with us from time to time.
As far as real sessions go, I don't know about finding my other half, but I have actually 'lost myself' a few times, back in the good old days when drink was taken.
Yeah, a gig, not a session. 1981 as it happens. My stepbrother came to see me and brought a date, who subsequently followed me around for a couple of years. The only way I could figure out to get rid of her was to marry her.
A couple of years eh KFG, well you held out a lot longer than meself. I proposed after 5 months & we were married after 10 months. Been together now for 24 years.
As it happens I meself was following someone else around at the time and "wasn't interested, " but it turned out that a bird in the audience is worth more than one in a band.
"Been together now for 24 years."
Blessings upon the both of ye, and I honestly wish I could say the same.
Well, I met my love on a subway train ( Picadilly line, should have said underground but subway sounds like it might scan into something from E MaColl ).
And then half an hour later in a folk club.
I later found the club schedule, worked out what date it was, and turned up back home from work on the 20th anniversary of this date, in front of witmesses, with a big bunch of flowers and a bottle of bubbly. Felt rather proud of myself, and completely surprised her into the bargain.
Less than 4 months to go to the 30th anniversary of this date, with over 27 & 1/2 years of married life.
Not bad for a shotgun wedding, eh ? though it was British Immigration, not a heavy father, that held the shotgun.
House party session in Harlesden, NW London, way back in the late eighties. Despite that we still are both very good friends with the lass who was the host.
I can even mind the set of tunes I was playing. It sounded so bad she thought --- this guy's a mess. I'll get him sorted. She's still trying.....
My first wife was a jazz fan, and I was a jazz keyboard player at the time. When I got interested in ITM she became increasingly irritated by it and we eventually split up. My current wife had just returned from living for a year in Dublin when she attended Trinity College. She was heart-sick for Ireland and her friend brought her to a pub where we were playing. The music lit her up very nicely... I noticed... the rest is history.
"and definitly no viola players" - Ah Jim, so you like 'them' big, but not that big, eh?
At last, two real 'session' romances. Congrats to Danny & Jack. I'm sure McGregor will be so pleased. Hello...........McGregor?........Are you out there?..........................
Och, he's probably away chattin' up some braw wee 'bird' at the bar!
Yes i'm here!
I'm amazed by theese stories, please more!
Doesn't matter gigs or sessions, I rather meant meeting someone through playing music.
It's incredible what music can do for you in life.
So McGregor, how 'did' you get on with that bird at the bar?
I'm sure there are lots more session romance stories out there, but, well, you know how quiet, shy & retiring most of these org-ers are.
Add to that, the fact that it was always going to be hard to get big, brawny, beardy, bashful, bodhran bashers etc, to open up their hearts on a discussion board, & you shouldn't really be surprised then, at the lack of replies.
What would be interesting too, would be to hear of two org-ers actually meeting up and becoming 'an item', thanks, in part, to this site & uncle Jeremy.
Can't you just picture Jeremy with wings & a wee bow & arrow?
Who me? A tease? *grins* I don't want to say much since he posts here too. But basically we met at a local session, got to be good friends, flirted, and ended up together.

Perhaps I should have mentioned that she did have her Harp under her arm, that night. - well after all, what else should you take to The Harp Bar?

I met the love of my life at a session!
Sadly, she belonged to someone else
But some day I'll meet another full set of uilleann pipes and we'll run away together and be deliriously happy, ever after.
