Right now I kind of need one for Battle of the Bands because I'd rather not stand under a micophone.. Or have the microphone on top of me rather. T'will be interesting!
I settled on the LR Baggs after spending an awful amount of time, finance and effort on other pickups. I put the output through a zoom acoustic stomp box as a pre-amp, tuner, for EQ and effects.
Headway's the Band pickup has been working really well for me. It sounds as nice as a pickup can sound. The most wonderful thing about it, is that you can remove it with no problem. Setup takes under a minute. It is kind of funny-looking, though. I don't know where you live, but these are made in the UK . Having mine shipped to Canada (via a company in the States) took three agonizing months.
On my old Mandolin (now a Tenor Banjo, I traded) I used to have one of these http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/items/PUW15VM.htm for Mando of course I ran it through a Behinger Ultra Gain Tube preamp (also for sale through elderly) and it sounded great. Not a cheap system but you will pretty much need a preamp for whatever you get and the PUTW Pick up is cheaper than the Baggs.
Recommended pick-ups for fiddle?

Re: Recommended pick-ups for fiddle?
What's a nice fiddle like you doing in a place like this?
Has anyone ever told you you have beautiful Parisian dots?
If I told you you had a beautiful body would you hold it against my shoulder?
You don't sweat much for a viola.
