Tunes yesterday, Tunes tomorrow... forever Tunes Today!

Tunes yesterday, Tunes tomorrow... forever Tunes Today!

Haven't had one of these for a while. What are the most recent tunes you've added to your repertoire, what are you working on and what's next?

As for me, I've just about got The Coven and The Wedding Reel down. Busy working on By Golly, and thinking of starting on Black Pat's and Sean Ryan's.

Thanks Q, I knew there was something I meant to do - and it was to learn By Golly!

Currently working on The Gold Ring, Colonel Frazier's and The Drunken Landlady. Also trying to 'hone' Michael Ferry's (Farewell To Chernobyl) having learnt it from Gary Shannon's Lose The Head.

Reminds me, need to get off here and get some practicing done before the missus get's home!

Re: Tunes yesterday, Tunes tomorrow... forever Tunes Today!

Jim, The Cocktail, isn't it? I think Kenny alread posted it. You can listen to Desi Wilkinson and Paul McGrattan play the tune on the latest edition of Culan: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/genres/folk/aod.shtml?ulster/culan

By the way, I'm working on Scots pipe march called "Men of Argyll." I actually posted it to this site last year but forgot how it goes.

Sorry, Paul McGrattan doesn't play The Cocktail on the programme.

Re: Tunes yesterday, Tunes tomorrow... forever Tunes Today!

I picked up The High Reel last week in about ten minutes. . . it was one of those tunes I knew on GHB about 20 years ago, ported over to a new instrument with a different name.

Working on some tunes I picked off of David Power's album. Steampacket and Jenny Picking Cockles.

Maids of Tulla from the Live at Mona's disc that someone posted here a couple of weeks ago. Great tune!

Re: Tunes yesterday, Tunes tomorrow... forever Tunes Today!

Hey Q - The Wedding Reel is not the right name. It's actually MacLeod's Farewell. For the sake of Donald Shaw's peace of mind we shouldn't perpetuate Lunasa's error. I say "we" because it's also one of my favourite tunes and I have had to work really hard to stop calling it the Wedding Reel.

Re: Tunes yesterday, Tunes tomorrow... forever Tunes Today!

Jim, I've tried learning Trip to Nenagh a couple of times, but I've no recording of it, and I can't get my head round the key: the version here is in mainly in Dmix, but the one I've got from Brendan Mulkere's class is mainly in Dmaj, and both of them put the c naturals, c sharps and f naturals in different places... To my ear, which is admittedly not that familiar with the ins and outs of modes, Brendan's version sounds best, but with all his c sharps played as naturals. Er, but he probably knows best. I wish I could just hear it played on a flute, at speed. Could you record it and send it to me? :-D :-D

Re: Tunes yesterday, Tunes tomorrow... forever Tunes Today!

To my shame, I already knew that Ian. I usually refer to it as "The Wedding Macleody thing-a-ma-whatsit".

Re: Tunes yesterday, Tunes tomorrow... forever Tunes Today!

All of a sudden, without intending to, I've verged onto the Scottish side of the street:
"250 to Vigo"
"The Snuff Wife"
"The Lasses Fashion"
and, ulp, "Nelson Mandela's Welcome to the City of Glasgow"

...but that said, I've also been tussling with "Betsy's Delight," by the Kane sisters.

And just to annoy my teenage daughters, and somewhat amuse my missus, I've even tried "Walking on the Moon." Can't quite get that Sting impersonation down, though.

Re: Tunes yesterday, Tunes tomorrow... forever Tunes Today!

Working some jigs I picked up at the East Coast Tionol from Patrick Ourceau; An Buachaill Dreoite, Willie Clancy's setting of Padgin O'Rafferty, and Paddy Canny's setting of Rakes of Clonmel. Also, working on a few polkas; Scartaglen, the polka set from Kevin Burke's Up Close CD (A Polka, The Finnish, Jessica's Polka). Also a real nice polka Paddy O'Brien (the breathing) wrote and recorded with Chulura called Mike Coogan's polka. Newest reels include The Colliers and the Templehouse.

Re: Tunes yesterday, Tunes tomorrow... forever Tunes Today!

Hello all, my first post. I'm also working on some Paddy (Offaly) O'Brien tunes: Sarah's Delight, The Small Hills of Offaly, and The Antrim Rose. I mainly play the fiddle by ear, but was very happy to find the sheet music of these three tunes on this site. I'm enjoying the discussions.

Re: Tunes yesterday, Tunes tomorrow... forever Tunes Today!

Actually in the past 45 minutes I've pretty much gotten The Beauty Spot internalized. Now it;s just a few months of polishing before it sees the light of day.

Trying to tighten up some tunes I have been playing forever. This afternoon I was working on "Off the California." Yesterday I did "Have a Drink with Me."

Re: Tunes yesterday, Tunes tomorrow... forever Tunes Today!

Working on The Hermit of Killarney and have been having fun with Planxty Madam Maxwell. Lately mastered Girls of Farranfore and A Fig for a Kiss. I picked up Glenn Weisers "Cetic guitar" and have been strugling with tabulature for South Wind. I bought an Irish fute and am trying to get a (any) note out of it.

I just posted Mícheál Ó Raghallaigh's version of Trip to Nenagh, for those who are interested.

At the moment I'm trying to get the tunes down that were played at the Dave Williams memorial session, which you can see at kerrywhistles.com. Have a look here:

Re: Tunes yesterday, Tunes tomorrow... forever Tunes Today!

Been working on the jig The Rambler (learning it from the James Morrison recording, which I love) and also McDermotts - as played by Sean Maguire more or less.
