Just cataloguing this in work, haven't had time to look at it properly yet. Although it completely neglects the contemporary music scene in Ireland (which is how I got my hands on it in the first place), it looks really good from a trad perspective. Includes a diary of summer schools and festivals, discography, info on specialist record companies, as well as background info on lots of aspects of trad music.
What do you mean by the "contemporary music scene" in Ireland, by the way? Just to clarify, are you talking about contemporary or non traditional "music" as such or do you also mean that more recent traditional bands such as Danu, Lunasa, et al or post Bothy Band/Planxty etc and their music don't get a mention either?
I'm not being picky. It's just that I haven't seen the book myself and would like to know.
Contemporary as in art music - the book claims to be "a comprehensive A-Z guide to Irish and Celtic music in all its forms". Leave out the "all its forms" bit and I'll agree... It does include contemporary and progressive trad groups though, even saw friends of mine, mid- to late-20s in it.
As in, it's comprehensive in the trad scene (from what I can tell at a glance), but not in "all forms" of Irish music. I work in contemporary music, it's a recurring trend, pretend we don't exist... www.cmc.ie
So, really it's just the title that's wrong? Should it be called "The Walton's Guide to Irish *Traditional* Music" instead?
That would be a very worthwhile publication(probably it is, anyway) but, at least we wouldn't expect to find anything about U2, Westlife etc. I realise that you're probably not referring to them but to the more contemporary Irish folk scene but the same argument would apply there too.
Actually, contemporary classical, not folk or pop... Oh, it looks really good, its only fault at a glance is claiming to be about all Irish music when it's clearly not. Never mind. Looking forward to reading it properly.

As I said, haven't read it yet (I'll be borrowing this one asap!), but has anyone else here seen it?

By the way, I couldn't find a section of the site for listing books - am I just being blind, or am I meant to post it here?

I'm quite interested to this book myself.

Any updated opinions on this book? I just came across a reference and wondered if it’s worth having.
