Honour for Martin Donohoe

Honour for Martin Donohoe

Just got word of the honour for Martin Donohoe, one of our "yellow board" members from Cavan Town. He has been selected as the winner of the "Vodafone Passion For The World Around Us Awards" being promoted by Cootehill Chamber of Commerce in association with “The Anglo-Celt’’.

Anyone who knows box player, Martin will know of his committment to things traditional like his Nyah festivals, recordings, tours, etc and I can't think of anyone more deserving of an award.

The awards presentation will take place next Monday 21st November in the White Horse Hotel Cootehill at 6.30 p.m.
Hopefully some session org members in the Cavan area may be able to join him on the night as I'm sure the craic and ceol will be mighty.

Re: Honour for Martin Donohoe

Here are a couple of snipits of info on the bould Martin:

http://www.cavancoco.ie/cccws/templates/general/tge_index.aspx?str_ID=66&new_ID=207
"The Caught Bouquet is the brain child of Heather Brett and well known musician Martin Donohoe bringing together the music, poetry and visual art of County Cavan in CD and book form."

http://www.mustrad.org.uk/reviews/cavan.htm
"Musically, the county's most famous son is Ed Reavy, though he emigrated to the US as a teenager.  From the same era came Johnnie Maguire, best known as a tin whistler who spent most of his adult life in Belfast (where his son, the fiddler Seán was born in 1926 - Seán, of course, prefers McGuire as his surname).  More recently comes the fiddler Antóin Mac Gabhann and he too is a Cavan exile, living nowadays in County Meath, while another well-known figure who does still live in the county is button accordionist Martin Donohoe."

Interesting info there on Sean.
I had no idea his real name was 'Maguire', although you can be sure cos knew all about that - and much more besides, no doubt!
Confirmation too, if any were neaded, that Sean was actually born in Belfast, not Co. Cavan.

Re: Honour for Martin Donohoe

Hi Ptarmigan,Yes Sean Was born Sean Stephen Maguire, but actually in 1927,on St.Stephen`s day, where he got the middle name. His mother was a Ballycastle,Co.Antrim woman,Martha Butler. The reasons why he changed to McGuire are best not mentioned as they did not do him credit!!!

Re: Honour for Martin Donohoe

Wow cos, thanks for that info. I had no idea Sean's mum was a Ballycastle woman. Perhaps that's why Sean seemed to enjoy coming up to the Northern Lights festival each year.

Although I have heard a few tales of the exploits of himself & 'The Shadow' around nearby Armoy, so he certainly was no stranger to this area.

Re: Honour for Martin Donohoe

Thanks for the ino Ptarmigan. I hadn't heard about Martin's literary skills in producing the book/CD. For a box player he has many strings to his bow!
