Re: gods

OK SFS, I notice your gods all live in America!

Can my Gods live anywhere?

If so, my Irish Music Gods would be:

Vocals - Cathal McConnell
Banjo - Mick O'Connor
Fiddle - Too many to single out just one
Accordion - Ciaran Kelly
Concertina - Mícheál Ó Raghallaigh
Mandolin - Kieran Hanrahan
Guitar - Ciaran Kelly
Bodhran - Cookstown Mickey

Re: gods

Dick, I noticed you put down someone as God of the bodhrán. So who'd be the God of the shakey-egg then?

Re: gods

John Doyle, Mick McAuley, Seamus Egan, Donnchadh Gough, Benny McCarthy, Sean McCann, Winifred Horan, John Whelan, Paul Finn, Tom Doorley. Those are off the top of my head... there's probably more.

Yes, I am a raving Solas fan. How ever did you guess?

Re: gods

Tommy Peoples, Frankie Gavin, James Kelly, Johnny Doherty, Andy McGann for fiddle.
Joe Burke, Jackie Daly for box.
I'm sure there are many others, I just can't think of them offhand.

Re: gods

my gods are tommy peoples (fiddle), finbarr dwyer (box), john doherty, michael coleman (both fiddle), and john gannon (melodeon). not the same as my very favorite musicians, but definitely my musical heroes.

Ptarmigan, I can't believe you get to play a session with Ciaran Kelly every week! I heard him for the first time this summer on an old home recording of the "Ciaran Kelly trio," followed by a couple tracks that I'm pretty sure are just him, based on the style, and I was absolutely blown away. He's got a really lovely rhythm to his playing.

Lisaniska - You forgot to mention John Gaughan, the god of open-C tuned guitar.

Re: gods

Eh, sorry to dissapoint you 'heth' but the Ciaran Kelly I regularly play with is actually a Fermanagh man, who is now based around Cookstown.

If I'm right, the Ciaran Kelly you are thinking of, lives a little further south! Both fine musicians though.

Hey Button - "So who'd be the God of the shakey-egg then?" - tell me, are we talking Anglo Egg or English Egg?

A partial list of my gods, in no particular order and by no means complete...

... did I mention that I kinda like Irish fiddle?

Re: gods

Funny, nobody mentioned Tansey, Sean Maguire, and Micho Russell.

Re: gods

Surprised no one's mentioned Seamus Ennis or Willy Clancy yet.

Re: gods

What an appalling lack of pipers! Granted Ennis and Clancy were two of the best (and thank you for mentioning them, silverspear!) but how about:

Patrick J. "Patsy" Touhy, Bernard Delaney, Tom Ennis, Eddie Mullaney, Liam Walsh, Leo "God Almighty" Rowsome (for feck's sake!), Johnny and Felix Doran, Tommy Kearney, Tommy Reck, Mike Carney, Michael Gallagher, Finbar Furey, Paddy Keenan, Liam O'Flynn, Mick O'Brien, Ronan Browne, Neillidh Mulligan, Gay McKeon...

Re: gods

This fiddler died and found himself at St. Peter's gate. He asked Peter, "So where's the session?" Peter pointed to a sign that said, "Pub, this way." and replied, "Just follow the signs there. And the recently deceased fiddler said, "Thanks very much." and happily strolled along following the signs to what looked like a lovely little pub. He peeked inside and saw Cooley's accordion on a chair, Coleman's fiddle on another, Derek Bell's harp, McKenna's flute on another chair, etc. etc. But there was only one gray haired old fella there playing the fiddle like a crazed weasel all by himself. He looked around and noticed the pub was empty except for this mad fiddler and decided it looked to dodgy to go in -- so he decided to go back and ask Peter what the story is. When he got back to the gate he explained to Peter what he found and asked who the crazy old fella was that's playing fiddle all by himself at the pub. Peter replied, "Oh him... that's God -- he thinks he's Frankie Gavin."

Ba-da -- boom! I'll be here all week. ;-)

Re: gods

Well in my defense - I did say it was a partial list and that I kinda like fiddlers ;-)

Also, since gods in the thread is with a small "g" I didn't think it applied to pipers. They deserve a capital "G" don't they?

Nice one Jack! It's obvious you don't need a day job :-)

Re: gods

Liz Carroll would be a good candidate, as would be Mairtin O'Connor, a god of the accordion who doesn't get near enough the exposure he should over here in the US.
