Just seen the first of these on BBC4 - remembering the original series which Aly Bain organised some years ago and I still have on cassete somewhere - Dick Gaughan singing the Wild Mountain Thyme with the McGarrigle sisters and Emmylou Harris doing harmony chorus was a stand-out moment for me back then.
My only complaint about this series not enough subtitles, and too much background 'tween music bits; ok my two complaints are not enough subtitles, too much background, and not enough tunes; ok, my three complaints are not enough subtitles, too much background, not enough tunes, and I cant't get my VCR to record off digital; ok, my four complaints are....
Is that the same as the Transatlantic sessions? Led by Aly Bain and dobro player Jerry Douglas if I mind right.
Filmed at Raemoir House, Banchory, near Aberdeen, was it not? although the scenery shots contrived to make you think it was on the West Coast somewhere.
O'Donnels Return has another name - is it O'neills march or the Eagles whistle or something? I think the Chieftains used it in their programme piece the Battle of Aughrim.
I enjoyed the music but in what sort of session do the participants arrange themselves differently for each set? An yes, some information on the musicians would have been nice. Some were briefly introduced during the programme, the lead singers got their names on the subtitles but the fulll list in the final credits flashed by in very small lettering.
The first series of Transatlantic Sessions was filmed at Montgreenan House , Kilwinning in Ayrshire and the shots were of the west coast. Offhand I can't remember where the second season was shot but I think Bren is probably right.
I believe this was the first of several, obviously working on the same general format as Aly Bains' Transatlantic Sessions of several years ago, but restricting themselves to mainly scots and irish musicians and singers. Perhaps all these air fares made another transatlantic session impractical.
And it was on BBC4, immediately following a Dick Gaughan concert - now that was an hour-and-a-half that made the licence fee well worthwhile !
Hour and a half making the license fee worthwhile.....I was in ecstacy!!!!! Dick, Martin Simpson AND michael McGoldrick on one bill followed by the Highland Sessions! I banned the family from the room for 1.5hrs, poured a couple of glasses of red wine and chilled!
More for the next few weeks
Repeats on Sunday night
Bren - you're just buying the wrong papers - it was listed with a short article and a photo in the Observer magazine tv guide section from last Sunday, otherwise I might have missed it too.
Highland Sessions are 6 part series, at 10.00pm Fridays, repeated at 3.25am Saturday Mornings, so you've missed the first one, but still 5 to go
However, I think Dick Gaughan is a one-off concert, which was shown, and is repeated tonight, Sunday at 11.55pm and repeated at 3.05am Monday morning, featuring Dick with Martin Simpson, Michael McGoldrick, (and I think also Mary McMasters on Harp)
Hey Enob, I had no idea there was someone on here with this name. It is very close indeed, to that daft term I came up with, a while back for 'session posers', which I won't even use now, cause it's too close, and I have no wish to offend you. Especially as I don't even know you.
You may be relieved to know that I shall not use it any more, either - just in case you are a black belt Karate expert!
Can anyone help me out, im looking for the names of the tunes thats the great Steve Cooney played on the last program to be shown on Scottish TV, it was a solo set, and the second tune was the famous si beag si mhor (sheebeg sheemhore),
If anyone can help me out with the first tune it would be most appreciated.
