Hi all, I'm trying to learn the pigeon on the gate and have just one quick stupid question. What does "~" mean after or before a note?

Re: ~~~~~~~

It's a roll.

Re: ~~~~~~~

Sorry but I'm only learning. what exactly is a roll?

Re: ~~~~~~~

JOe, did you and Jim cross-post? Jim's explanation is a roll: the note itself, followed quickly by the one above, followed quickly ...oh, you can re-read it!

Re: ~~~~~~~

Joe, the conventional "long roll" would be E F# E D E. with a little more stress on the first E. It's really a triplet broken up by grace notes instead of direction changes. Common variation is (i.e.) E G E D E Sometimes one sounds better than the other. I don't know if "Ceol Rince na hEireann" (or something)
still exist but in my ancient (yellow and orange cover) edition there's a table for each of the instuments up the scale.

Learn the tune 1st and then add it when you can fit it into the rhythm.

Hope that helps.

To the rest of y'all, sorry to be a party pooper.
