Assuming you know the tunes and sets, what's wrong with playing music we hate. I know that I've played tunes and sets night after night for crowds and I can play them, but I hate the tunes.
I'm not talking about learning tunes I don't know and hate so I can play them night after night.
But if I know the tune and can play it but I hate it what do you think about playing it.
Sometimes I learn a tune I hate so that I can hate it that much more. And then I play it.
i like playing music i hate to see if i can play variations of it so that i like it. if i can find just the right place to put a roll, or a little variation or whatever so that i enjoy the tune, then i've just expanded my playing a little bit.
I'd say go for it, if it entertains you. If this is a session, you might try introducing some better tunes, If it's performance or just playing alone, you've only yrself to blame.
It's amazing how often tunes you don't like stay in the memory. Like irritating pop songs - are there ITM equivalents to annoying pop songs? I presumed it was because these annoying tunes are usually fairly easy but repetitive.
Usually the last thing I listen to before I get to work stays in my head all day. Today it's The White Petticoat.
I sometimes play tunes I don't like - either because they're part of a band set or it's been requested. I play it as though I mean it, smile - and sometimes even manage to convince myself that I'm enjoying it!!
What's wrong with playing music we hate ? Life's too short particularly when there's so many great tunes out there. If someone else plays these tunes it can offer one an opportunity for a comfort break or maybe a trip to the bar!
Heth says "i like playing music i hate to see if i can play variations of it so that i like it."
hmm. . . . interesting notion.
I wonder if you do the same with food.
For myself - why play tunes I don't like?
Unless there is an economic imperative it would seem to me to be the most bizarre behaviour. Like peeing on an electric fence just to see if it hurts as much as last time.
What's wrong with Garrett Barry's and The Bucks? I just learned both of them....oh, well....you don't really have to answer that.....sniff....I'll go play them by myself, then.
A favorite trick of mine is to wait until my son has just gone to bed, then whistle a tune outside his bedroom. He reckons he can't get to sleep for an hour afterwards because he has a tune in his head.
I never met a tune I hated--I might have had trouble with because it was tricky, got frustrated with it, got somewhat tired of it, but never hated a tune. I tend to like many of the more familiar tunes and songs that others sometimes look down their nose at. I am old, predictable and corny, and I guess the old chestnuts fit my personality. I happen to like Garrett Barry's Jig, for example.
So do I! And I like The Bucks too. Like Andee, I actually went to the trouble of learning these, though maybe not quite so recently. So, I'll play them if I want.
There's loads of tunes I'm not fussy about but I'll play 95% or more of them if I'm in company. Maybe, I won't start them myself out of choice but it's not possible to avoid them all, unless you wish to be completely anti social (I'm only a little bit when it suits )
It also depends where you are. In Scottish sessions, for instance, The Bucks and Garrett Barry's wouldn't mean anything at all(Irish Washerwoman, Blackthorne Stick etc might) so they would be quite a novelty. So too would many well known Scottish tunes if they were introduced into an Irish session.
There aren't many tunes I really *hate*, but a fair few I dislike. I generally don't play tunes that fall under either heading, though, because I don't have enough time to play the tunes I love!
I did used to play tunes I hated, though, when in Junior Symphony orchestra (the conductor's taste was strictly in his mouth), and came to the conclusion that although I sometimes learned to not hate the tunes in question, usually I ended up wanting to break all my fingers just before orchestra practice so I didn't have to go through that cr*p again.
Tarrantella, you're right about how tunes you dislike get stuck in your head too often! I should tell you about the cure I've learned for that; you'd get a kick out of it.
How can you hate a tune that's "in the tradition"?? 30 seconds and they're over, as are many things in life! It's a bit like saying you like Mozart, but there's just these couple of 16 bar fragments that get on your nerves.
RichardB,
Are you saying you should like a tune just because it’s “in the
tradition” ?
30 secs or not doesn’t make a difference how long it takes ?
That’s a bit like I don’t like getting thumped, but as it’s only for
30 secs it doesn’t matter.
You either like a tune or not – you’re allowed make up your
own mind on it.
I just can't think of any I'm ever likely to hate - I even like Dingle Regatta and Harvest Home (the former can be snuck in mischievously between a couple of other slides, but maybe HH is best kept at home. I suppose I'm at the stage where I just rejoice when tunes are started up that some people might find a bit jaded simply because I can play them confidently without making a pillock of myself.
Aw, come on.....let's not get all adolescent about this. There are "Humpty Dumpty" jigs, sure, but do we adults "hate" nursery rhymes just because we have grown out of them? The reality is that despite an experienced musician's preference, say, for big reels, most of the listening public just love boppy little jigs and simple polkas.

Beyond that it's pretty much as heth tells it.

In spite of my better efforts to not learn Garrett Barry's Jig, it seeped into my head anyway and I play it when it comes up at a session. Go figure.

Re: What's wrong with playing music we hate
I have no problems with the Bucks, other than occasional bouts of dyslexia when I can't keep straight which combination of F, D, and E I'm playing.
