The Corrs have been given honorary MBEs for their "outstanding contribution to the music industry." Well, what about that? A deserving case, or could we think of more suitable candidates?
I agree with Geoff, why not give it to someone that's actually contributed to the industry, like someone who's introduced new things and new ways of playing them- for example Planxty?
Dont ye know its just good for politics what about U2 they have been in the biz thru thick and thin for a fair amount of time and it has to be said they are as good today if not better than they were 25 yrs ago, tell me what the feck is outstanding about the corrs contribution to the music biz
I really like the Corrs. I'm maybe the one person at The Session who does... fantastic live shows, wonderful music and, well, hot ladies.
So they mix a bit of trad into their pop music. Get over it. They're not masquerading as a traditional band - they know exactly the sort of music they play and they're fine with it. Sometimes they do play ITM tunes at their concerts and it's great. I also don't know where you lot get the idea that they can't play their instruments. The drummer isn't amazing, and Jim's guitar skill isn't top notch, but they're all fantastic on the piano and Sharon's grand at the fiddle. Honest, she is. She just doesn't do very much on the records.
But hey, I've seen so far how you lot love to bitch about them, so don't let me stop you. Enjoy
I quite like the Corr's but the awards they should have won were the ones for having pretty good voices, for writing memorable commercial songs and for being really fit. It's not a bad combination for an old perv like me.
I enjoy Corr-baiting as much as the next man; as an Irishman it's in your genes to be full of sour grapes. But let's be honest no matter if they're your cup of tea or not they have introduced a lot of people to Irish music especially kids. I'm glad they're doing well. We should be proud of our countrymen; it's not as if they're the only people cashing in on Irishness. West Clare or Dublin anyone?
Why can't everyone just accept that The Corrs got the award for everything that they do. I mean, not everyone goes to Africa on a mission trip to build houses for people that cannot afford to do so themselves. They are great people and are highly qualified for this award. They do all the work with Live8, ONE and 46664...do some research...they are amazing people and deserve this award much more then most others!

Re: The Corrs, MBE
Didn`t realise that they were Members of the British Empire!
I would like to nominate Seamus Tansey for next year! He is much more deserving!

Re: The Corrs, MBE
The use of the words "music" and "Industry" say it all

Re: The Corrs, MBE
You have to be kidding!?
The Corrs give a new depth of meaning to the word bland.
I give up.

Re: The Corrs, MBE
The awards for the music industry, not the quality of the actual music. As in business, management, money-making....

Oh, just read the article, apparently charity is in there too, fair play to them so.

Re: The Corrs, MBE
Right there Conan, - & I'm sure you'll be sad to learn that I wouldn't climb over them to get at you, in an orjee!
Surely Seamus Tansey doesn't need the MBE, does he?
After all, he already has 'letters' after his name!
A better idea Zookman, but I think you'll find that Planxty aren't actually members of the British Empire either!
tumeltyni - if the award is actually for their efforts for charity, then surely they should be getting some kind of a Charity thingy, shouldn't they?

I'd love to climb over the Corrs, apart from Jim

Re: The Corrs, MBE
As "musicians" living in Ireland they do not pay tax so they can afford to be charitable.
Like good old JP the horse man, gave 3 million for a hospital. If he paid tax they could build 6 hospitals.
And yet again my old mucker M.G. is spot on. It is the music industry, all about money, nothing to do with music.

Haha good point Ptar, are the Corrs from Northern Ireland?

Re: The Corrs, MBE
When looking at the "music industry" it's important not to assume that "awards" are distributed based on merit.
Most are simply publicity events arranged by interested parties.
I don't mind the Corrs, per se, but I only hear pop music in grocery stores or from friends' kids.

Tom, this may be a wild goose chase? ( well, it'd make a change from you guys chasing Ptarmigan, now wouldn't it?
)
Perhaps the press release you saw, was actually a miss print & it should have read The Corrs, MAYBE - just a thought?
Well, it's all a bit far fetched, isn't it.
No doubt they advocate 'World Peace' too!
Watch out - next year, they'll be up for the Nobel Peace Prize!

It seems MUSICIANS don't like a band which has success, makes a lot of money and on top of it the members are good looking. I like them anyway.
