Trick . . or treat?

Trick . . or treat?

What should be the traditional musician's response to the knock and cry of "Trick or Treat?"

Borrowing from another thread, I wondered about having a window open in a darkened room above the front door, take a convenient banjo, and play:

Wow! Is this the first thread with it's own 'Sell By' date?

Re: Trick . . or treat?

I would have thought the "treat" was not to play the banjo.
A good "trick" would certainly be to invite them in and then play it.

I have no idea what this tune is or what it's supposed to mean. :-(

Re: Trick . . or treat?

Trick or Treat is an ancient (1980s) American session tradition re-imported back into the UK.

Re: Trick . . or treat?

Duelling Banjos, although the original name was Duelling Banjo. There is only one banjo. The duel was between the banjo and the mandolin as on the Dillards excellent recording.

Re: Trick . . or treat?

How about Duelling 'Air' Banjos?

Course you can see that's actually one Banjo - & one Guitar! :-)

Top be used only by those who have muscles, or a convenient heavy object.

Three vampires are in a resteraunt. The first vampire orders a pint of blood. The second vampire orders a pint of blood. The third vampire orders a glass of plasma. The waitress turns and yells to the barman: two bloods and a blood light.

Re: Trick . . or treat?

There are some good Halloween-y tunes on the Database here. There are: the Witches, The Witch of the Waves, the Mad Magician, the Witch of the Glen, the Punter's Graveyard, and recently The Ghost of Ballybrolly, Frankenstein AND the Hunchback! Only managed to learn the Witches and the Mad Magician in time for this year, but they are fine tunes.
And yer a sour lot for trick or treat. Ye'd get tricked. I'd egg your windows if it was me.

Re: Trick . . or treat?

I find Tam Lin and the accompaning legend to be pretty creepy. (http://obsidianmagazine.com/Pages/tamlin.html).

One spooky, windy night of a full moon, around three a.m. I was in a wooded park just soaking in the experience when 4 teenagers happened into the area. I hid in the woods to see what they were up to. When I figured they should rather be at home on such a scarry night, I took out my Low D which I always have with me and played, very slowly, Jump the Sun from out of the dark woods. That sent them home rather quickly.

Re: Trick . . or treat?

So, let me get this straight feardearg, what your telling us is, that you are in the habit of going out into the woods at 3am, to play with your big Low D?

Well, I suppose we all need a hobby - of one sort or another!

Nurse! He's over there...........................

Re: Trick . . or treat?

Perhaps that's what passes for 'Trick or Treating' in the Michigan area?

The mind boggles! :-D

Re: Trick . . or treat?

Before Halloween is gone completely, perhaps Zina can tell us if there are any photos to prove she didn't renege on her promise?

"next Halloween, Pete is determined to go as Collector Guy from one of the Halloween Simpson's episodes.
This means, perhaps you guessed it if you saw the episode, that I will be, er, dressed up in skimpy armor and cellophane as "I keep telling you, I'm NOT Xena, I'm Lucy Lawless".

I've already started losing weight for the role. *grin*

Re: Trick . . or treat?

I ride a ten speed home from work. Sometimes I work til 3-4 am. I pass this beautiful park. I often stop there and play for hours in the moon light, watching Orion rise and move across the sky. Owls hoot and sometimes one sees a fox or other creature. On the night mentioned above, it was magnificent with the wind blowing the trees wildly and the clouds sometimes parting to reveal the full moon and somtimes covering it. As Loreena would sing it:

The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon the cloudy seas
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor

The whistle sounds so wonderful in the great outdoors, also. Ya had to have been there!

I always have a whistle and a low d wherever I go. It just came in handy that night!

Re: Trick . . or treat?

One year I had this great realistic Devil's mask and I sat at my front door with a red light illuminating me and a big bowl of candy at my feet. I played a spooky minor reel on my concertina and the kids in the neighborhood would slowly creep closer and closer trying to figure out if I was actually playing it. (They’d never seen one before.) As they got closer and closer they would be saying to each other, "Is that real?" And when they got real close I'd stop abruptly, hit a big loud cluster chord and yell, "WHAT????" They would scatter like cockroaches. The ones that didn't were rewarded with candy. The ones that ran away came back later with their parents who were not pleased with my presentation. I made up for it the next year though answering the door with my pet crow perched happily on top of my beret. (That’s where she usually was anyway.)

Re: Trick . . or treat?

Sorry feardearg, only messin'!

I actually worked as a Gamekeeper myself for a few years & spent manys a dark winter night wandering about in the moonlight woods - on Poacher patrol, so I know how it is.

Years after I left Slane estate, my Old Headkeeper was walking through the woods one stormy night when suddenly someone stuck a gun in his back & told him to stand still, while his mates shot all the roosting pheasants in that wood!

Now if only he'd had a Low D in his pocket that night!

Re: Trick . . or treat?

No offense taken at all.

Actually, when I am there, I figure that I am the scarriest thing in the woods. (http://www.feardearg.com/fd05.jpg) And because I am used to hiding from bill collectors and people who get irritated at higher octave instruments, who I don't scare I can flee.

Pubs are great fun to play in, but nothing beats the woods!
