Uilleann bag problem

Uilleann bag problem

Hi again!
This is the practical question for pipers: what is your receipt for bag sealant?
If it isn't a secret, certainly)
It is for uilleann pipes. I already have found one in the "Handbook for Uilleann Pipes" by Eddie Climo, but...
Please, help me, if you can!

Re: Uilleann bag problem

Dogskin makes the best bags but the bunny-huggers will complain, so put your dog-skin inside a goat-skin bag.

Re: Uilleann bag problem

A?
Not about skin!
About Liquid, that entered into bag to make it tight!

Re: Uilleann bag problem

Oh, you mean bag seasoning. 50/50 beeswax and lanolin seems the way to go for many. You can also get bag seasoning from Highland pipe band outfitters.

Re: Uilleann bag problem

Interesting that many of the lesser quality leathers need this seasoning. A high quality chrome tanned leather is not prone to much if indeed any leaking. You may want to look into a better quality bag all around. L&M and MacHarg seem to be pretty popular at the top of the 'well-made-bag' list.

Re: Uilleann bag problem

I've never used seasoning or sealant on an uilleann pipe bag , I have done with highland pipes.
I would opt for getting a new bag I think as I would be concerned with the effect any type of seasoning might have on uilleann pipe reeds.

Re: Uilleann bag problem

A top quality well tied in L&M bag is THE remedy for bag wose. But the vegetarian seasening is a cheap, good fix. I've known it to seal leaky bellows too. And if you are one of those people who put water in your bag or bellows to help with humidity problems, wood soap and Crisco is the way to go. It stays where you put it and doesn't come out in lumps or dust all over your reeds. It keeps the leather in good condition too.

Re: Uilleann bag problem

I wouldn't normally butt into a pipers session, butttttt......

"But the vegetarian seasening is a cheap.."

Now you're not going to seriously tell me that anything vegetarian could possibly be used in Highland/War pipe bags - surely you'd use something made from raw meat! ;-)

It's Mhor meaning great not war, by the way, and I have 5 L&M bags being kept in great condition with the vegetable solution.

Re: Uilleann bag problem

Aye baglady it's pìob mhor in Gaelic, but they're referred to as war pipes in Ireland to the best of my knowledge - and, I don't doubt the efficaciousness of your witches brew.

Re: Uilleann bag problem

No it's not. I have been corrected by Irish musicians in Ireland.
Sorry, I don't know how to make smiley faces on this site.

Oh, and in Ireland they ar Union pipes. Americans call them Uilleans.

Re: Uilleann bag problem

Ah, confusion explained.

Uilleann = elbow (also called union pipes).

Highland pipes (pìob mhor) in Scotland equivelant to War pipes in Ireland.

In my original attempt at humour, I was referring to Highland pipes, NOT uilleann pipes.

But if you know better, baglady, I'm quite happy to let you believe what you want.

Sin agad e.
