In the car, which is where most of my listening occurs, I currently have:
In Play, John Doyle and Liz Carroll
Wayward Son, John Doyle
Fiddler's Green, Tim O'Brien
The Girl Who Couldn't Fly, Kate Rusby
The Rough Guide to Irish Music, Volume 2
Woman of the House, Cherish the Ladies
Prentice Piece, Dick Gaughan
And a few others that escape my memory at the moment.
These are the CDs I have at the office, and to which I'm listening pretty regularly -- both ITM and non-ITM:
Liz Phair, "Exile in Guyville"
June Tabor, "Always"
Talking Heads, "The Best of Talking Heads"
Tom Waits, "Used Songs"
Sean Tyrell, "The Orchard"
Robbie O'Connell, "Never Learned to Dance"
Flynn Cohen, "Mellow Yell"
Rob Siegel, "Shaker Chair"
Norah Jones, "Come Away with Me"
Grateful Dead, "What a Long Strange Trip It's Been: Best of the Grateful Dead"
Various, "Gaelic Roots"
Youssou N'Dour, "Set"
Equation, "Hazy Daze"
Equation, "The Lucky Few"
Arrogant Worms, "Toast"
Nightingale, "Three/Trois"
Jennifer and Hazel Wrigley, "Mither o' the Sea"
North Cregg, "Summer at My Feet"
Kathryn Tickell and Ensemble Mystical
Martin Carthy, "The Carthy Chronicles"
Vienna Teng, "Waking Hour"
The Watersons, "Mighty River of Sound"
A bunch of health care workers have invaded my classroom, so they can give hepatitis shots to all the teachers in the distrcit. At the moment one of them is rambling about how prisoners use limited resources to create drugs. Fairly entertaining.
If they weren't here I'd be listening to a Laurence Nugent album I got yesterday.
Hi Avery, I don't know whether they'll travel beyond the UK, but their record, which is very, very short, features some very beautiful music. Despite there being just 5 tracks, there's quite a variety of music and arrangements. I'm not crazy about pipes myself normally but this is superior stuff. To me, it beats Kathryn Tickell (whom I quite like by the way)
At the moment I don't really have a lot of time for listening but I have just got hold of 3 recordings of Tommy Peoples live in Sandinos, Derry.. Stunning.......... They were all made in the last couple of years.
Other than these I have Rosin White's and Jim McFarland's Cd's for the songs.
Two Gentleman of Clare. Someone mentioned it a while back in a discussion and I dug it out. Also, Smokey Chimney and the first Sliabh Notes CD in the car.
At this exact moment, as I type this, The Cheftains ("Best of the Cheiftains" CD) is on the ol' boombox, just as a coincidence ( I bought the CD earlier tonight).
If it had been the radio, it would have been classical; or I could have had my Beatles CDs on.
In the car, it's talk radio for sure, until the World Series starts.
I am listening to Tony O' Connell & Andy Morrow too! Great album! Can't wait to go to their concert at Ennis Tradfestival. I also listen to the first CD of Mc Carthy's Fiddle Fair at the moment.
*midi files of the score to "Scarborough Fair" and "Take the long way home" (Supertramp) which we are currently rehearsing with the orchestra
*McDermotts 2 Hours vs Levellers
* Beginners Guide to Folk Music - best of the 3 CDs
Right now it's the recording I made of the concert at the East Coast Tionol. Michael Cooney, Debbie Quigley, Maire Ni Ghrada, Willie Kelley, Ivan Goff, Patrick Ourceau and Jimmy O'Brien Moran. It was an awesome show!
On my way in to work this morning it was Randal Bay and Roger Landes - House to House.
On the way home it will probably be Patrick Ourceau et. al. - Live at Mona's.
Once I get home it's hard telling what I'll spin up betweenn practice sets.
I'm llistening to the rippling sound of wavelets running up and shifting the shingle on Goring Bay, as Mrs Ottery and the Otterettes frolic 'au naturelle' in the surf. Every now and then my personal session assistant turns up with a fresh pint of the black stuff. The wind is whispering in the sugar palms and the red throated boobies are cooing their plaintive song in the boabab grove. From afar snatches of high harmony from the Streatley Castrati and Silver Band Society waft over the river on the breeze.
Liam O'Flynn and Seamus Heanny-Piper and Poet- Rolling Wave
Ronan Browne/Peter O'Loughlin-Touch me if you dare-Trip to Athlone
Leo Rowsome-My Darling Asleep from the Drones and Chanter compilation
Corrs-Home (Yes, I know)
That Brian McGrath, is he top dog or what?
It's all in the detail with him, those subtle variation on each tune - I can't get enough of 'Dreaming up the Tunes' and 'the Cat that ate the candle" and I've had the first cd for over two years.
I just saw Liz Carroll and John Doyle in Concert and have their new album. WOW!!! I haven't purchased John's new album, but I have heard it and he's still one of the very best Irish guitar players and he is much more assertive with his singing. I just purchased Danu's new DVD, "One Night Stand." Wow!!! 27 tracks from a Dublin concert with interviews, their band history and extras. It is a collection of old and new tunes, and I think it is there very best recording. I would strongly recommend all of the above. Best Wishes.
Cath, it's Trish here from Horseplay. Thanks for your nice comments on 20th Oct...
the demo CD you have was recorded in our kitchen. We're currently working on our first 'proper' CD - look out for it in 2006!
