As a strict backing man, you'd go a long way to get better than my old mucker Malcolm Wray, he has the best right hand I"ve ever heard. I"m not too impressed when he plays tunes, too staccato for me, but he is true to the Derry/Donegal way of playing fast. When people like Tommy Peoples always ask him to play back up at gigs in and around Derry, he must be highly thought of .
Agreement with many of the choices here! I just picked up a real gem of an old album, Frankie Gavis and Alec Finn from Shenachie. Lovely fiddle and bouzouki two-some back in 1977. I regard Diathe Sproule and Ciaran Curran of Altan awesome when they play together, such as on Local Ground. "Mattie" on the Rough Guide to Irish Folk Music has some lovely zook. "First Flight" by Gerald Trimble on "The Dance Music of Ireland: Jigs and Rells" on Celtophile is another lovely old piece, 1982 I think if those old brain cells are right. Michael Holmes with Dervish is wonderful. Roger Landes has a rare album out, "The Dragon Reels." For all of you bodhran lovers, Alfonso the famous bodhran maker is the percussion on this album. If you like picking music and can accept (5 course) Cittern, Pat Kilbride with "Rock and More Roses" has some very nice tracks back when he was playing more traditional music.
Michael Holmes
Donal Lunny
Robin Bullock - plays a short course, mostly melody
Gerard Trimble - plays a five-course, also mostly melody, his album 'Fisrt Flight' is good , but is at times overwhelmed by bones/spoons.
thanks JM, he happens to be a pretty OK fiddle player as well....there are a couple others I didn't mention: Eoin O'Neill over there and David Surette over this side of the pond (plays his in AEAE tuning)
Stefan you can hear Kevin Dorris on the Tamalin CD Rhythm 'n' Rhyme. Another excellent bouzouki player is Niall Ó Callanáin formerly of the great band Déiseal http://www.nialloc.com/
Eamon Doorley of Danu is excellent on their new DVD, "One Night Stand." I just purchased it.
I'd like to know about his internal microphone set up, as this was consistenly excellent through their sets and his solos.

Um, Alec Finn?
Johnny Moynihan's not such a slug, either, as I recall.
Robin Bullock, from what I hear of him, sounds pretty darn good.
