I'll be spending a good deal of time reading posts and taking in information here regarding style, attitude, background, technique for playing authentically trad music. Thanks for having me! --Peggy
That picture of your granddaugters is absolutely adorable. They look so cute. Oh yeah, hooray for another conversion to Irish music from the classical world. Want to come convince the classical musicians here that they should join me in playing folk music?
Thanks for the compliment on my cute granddaughters and the nice welcome, MM and musicfan.
As far as converting to Irish music from classical, I'm a believer that music is music as long as it's well played, no matter what the style or origin. So much classical is based on folk forms anyway. I also believe there must be some organization in order for sound to qualify as "music", so probably yanking three cat's tails in succession, recording the results, and selling it as alternative music might just be crossing the line...There's no reason why classical folks and traditional music lovers can't cross over and play old and new music with each other. Drawing lines is silly and elitist on both sides, don't you think?
Absolutely, that's why I need you to come talk to them. Ah, I'm just being persnickety. I'm a classical pianist and folk fiddler (play lots of instruments) and I'm the only one here at school that plays folk music. One of the other violinists plays some old-time music, but he's pre-med and really busy. I haven't found anyone at the school that is at all interested in playing Irish or any other type of folk music with me. And I've had several of the violinists look down on me for being a fiddler, right until I set one of the girls bridges back up for her after she knocked it off changing the A string on her violin.
There was this time in class, when one of the teachers put Aura Lee up on the overhead, the class looks at it for forever and then one of the guys (really knowledgeable classical musician) goes, oh that's Love Me Tender. I wanted to cry, instead I started laughing uncontrollably.
Most of the time if I say that I play traditional music, folk music, Irish music, etc the reactions that I get are: you mean ____?
1. Nickel Creek
2. Elton John (yes someone asked this once)
3. Peter, Paul, and Mary (the most commonly asked)
So, I'm not trying to be silly (not this time anyways) and definitely not elitist (I'm too low-class to be snooty) at all. More just grousing. Anyways, glad that you're here and that you have such level-headed, intelligent views on music!
Ahh musicfan, it was such a lovely image: "right until I set one of the girls bridges back up for her..." and then you had to spoil it all by explaining that it was on her violin..
Nevermind what I thought was happening. *sigh*
And yes "their 1754" ..it is nice to be here, even without the violence.
musicfan: I didn't think YOU were snooty! Or silly. I guess my point was that music is a "big tent". The older you get, the more you realize that putting people or their art in little categories or boxes is a waste of time, when you could be making music together!
Owell, I thought right away about that other kind of "bridge", too! I was ready to give musicfan a high five!
My pull toward my Scots/English and Irish roots is so strong, especially since I lost both of my parents. I have such a strong need to kind of complete the circle. Music is my way to do that.
Music is music as long as it's well played? Yes, I'm a hopeless romantic and idealist. You should see me, cleaning the house in my little shirtwaist dress with pumps, pearls, and perfect coif. Anyone for a plate of warm cookies and a glass of milk?
Nice to be here...

Ah - such innocence is touching in a lass.
Welcome aboard Peggy - you should have fun here if you're going to continue making inflammatory statements like that.

Re: Nice to be here...
Hmm, there's a thought, nope, this violinist is actually a pretty good friend, hence why I helped her rather then just sitting back and laughing.

Yes, I assumed bridgework, too, at first.

Re: Nice to be here...
However, I AM partial to that wonderful traditional music from across the pond, especially the stuff those Scots came up with a bit ago.
