Things you sacrifice for the music?

Things you sacrifice for the music?

What do you sacrifice in order to feed your passion for the music? Little things, big things? Career advancement (maybe you don't spend enough hours on the job, or are unwilling to travel or move?) Sports? Family time?

Don't mean to pry, but...

Re: Things you sacrifice for the music?

Grego you are prying :)
If you really love the music then nothing would be a sacrifice. Like was it such a hard sacrifice that I spent Sunday afternoon at a great session instead of working on the garden at home!

Re: Things you sacrifice for the music?

Sports - I adored climbing and enjoyed some martial arts, but it doesn't go well with taking care of my fingernails.

Apart from that, I don't feel like I'm sacrificing anything - I played since I can remember, and most of things were fitted in between time of practice and play.

I won't get much of a pension in 4 years time because throughout my life I only worked 15 years instead of 40 due to the music............

Re: Things you sacrifice for the music?

The state of the house mainly - my sisters have spent money on new kitchens/bathrooms etc whereas my husband and I have spent on instruments/PA equipment etc and only spend money on the house when things breakdown/fall apart etc.
And I'd rather spend time on playing than on housework so I won't be winning any Good Housekeeping awards!!

Re: Things you sacrifice for the music?

Ian - I said to a work colleague one day "I keep getting letters from my pension company saying that I'll be poor when I'm old" - he, being rather older than I am, replied "They keep sending me letters saying 'told you so'".

Re: Things you sacrifice for the music?

Three guys are waiting outside the pearly gates trying to get admission into heaven. The first guy is from Texas, and tells St. Paul (is that the right saint?) that he made 3 million dollars when he found oil, and that he arranged his will so tight that his family could live for four generations without doing any work.
"well, that is honourable," said St. Paul, "You may enter heaven."

The second person says to St. Paul,
"I won the lottery and won 18 million dollars. After I secured my families finances until well into the future, I donated millions to charity."
"That is very honourable," says St. Paul, "you may also enter heaven."

The third guy, noticing that both the previous two people have told St. Paul about how much money they made says,
"Well, I only made five thousand dollars in my entire life."
So St. Paul asks him, "Really? What instrument did you play?"

Re: Things you sacrifice for the music?

Showaddy, I'm in an odd situation. I have 3 and a half years to go before I retire in the UK, but am already retired in France. The French government want my records from the Uk, but they won't send them until' 2008. A sort of no mans land..... Having said that, I don't now have to pay all the bits and pieces everytime I do a gig. A year ago I lost 50% each time. So I'm not really complaining.

Same here. What made me think I could support myself in my old age by playing music?

Re: Things you sacrifice for the music?

Fiddlekit, you and I are in the same boat. Even though I don't revise for tests and I rush my homework, I still seem to get A's. Don't ask me how. But hey, I feel that I'm donating my time to an honourable cause. Um, what that cause is I don't know....but...um...hey look! A drug addicted squirrel!

My name is also Ken, and I last played a reel about an hour ago. However, I have almost got the jigs under control.

Re: Things you sacrifice for the music?

i got a job so i can get myself a new concertina. 3 year waiting list, and just enough time to save up the money. oh, and i need to buy another "step up" concertina in the mean time which i will sell when my final one is ready. so in order to fund the 2 concertinas (and the new flute i will have to get after that) i give up my practice time and work.

I broke my glasses a year ago and had to choose between new glasses or a fiddle bow. Turns out I can get by OK without glasses if I squint.

Re: Things you sacrifice for the music?

I'm convinced that one of several reasons my last boss hated me so much was that I had a life outside my job, if playing music is a life, that is.
Well, I don't work for him any more, and I have much more energy to practice, and go out and play.
Seems a fair bargain.

Re: Things you sacrifice for the music?

How could I till my forty acres
Not to speak of getting more,
With a medley of horns, bassoons and piccolos
Stirred in my brain by crows and robins
And the creak of a wind-mill—only these?
And I never started to plow in my life
That some one did not stop in the road
And take me away to a dance or picnic.
I ended up with forty acres;
I ended up with a broken fiddle—
And a broken laugh, and a thousand memories,
And not a single regret.
