Calling Ontario!

Calling Ontario!

Anyone out there in Ontario know, or know of, a MAIGAN HOMINICK? She is a Stepdance & Fiddle Champion.

The reason I ask is because she is related to the McGills of North Antrim.

When I moved here to North Antrim I named my music school after a local man Jim McGill who sadly had died shortly before I arrived.
Jim had spent a number of years teaching local youngsters to play the fiddle, on his own.
Now, unfortunately, none of Jim's relatives here still play the fiddle, but Maigan, who is a great niece of Jim's, is carrying on Jim's fiddling legacy, in Canada.

She was home here, a few years back & I invited her along to one of the junior sessions I ran, & needless to say she was a huge hit with the local, budding young musicians, especially with her 'dancing while she played' skills.

So, I just wondered if any .org-ers in Ontario had ever come across this young lady?

I don't believe she actually plays ITM 'yet', so is there actually an ITM scene in the Collingwood, Ontario, area?

If so, are there any really good fiddlers in the area that I could recommend for her?

I know she would love to play ITM but doesn't know any teachers.

From her track record, I'd say she could pick it up fairly quickly & would be a good player to have around.

Her Track Record:
To date she has over 100 trophies, plaques and medals in both fiddle and stepdance.
She won the junior Canadian Open Stepdance Championship two years in a row, came second in the 12 and under and in 2003, she won the Canadian Open Stepdance Championship in the 18 and under division. Maigan is also a champion fiddler and up until the present time, is the only junior girl/boy to have won both the Canadian Junior Open Championship in stepdance and the Canadian Junior Open Fiddle Competition in the same year.

Re: Calling Ontario!

She should try and find Will Henry, who is the fiddle player with the The Glenelg Full Moon Country Dance Band, who have been playing in and around the Collingwood area for 15 years. Glenelg is a township south of Collingwood.

Will is a quiet and pretty unassuming fiddler, but a great guy, as are all the players in the band.

I believe his number is (519) 371-9413

She likely does the Orangeville fiddle and dance competition, and there's lots of irish players mixed in with the Ottawa Valley, Cape Breton and straight up Canadian players there.

Re: Calling Ontario!

I looked up Maigan. She has a site on the web, and actually lives in Ingersoll, which is between London and Kitchener. 100 miles west and south of Collingwood.

Look up http://www3.sympatico.ca/celticmusic/celtic.htm
for music in that neck of the woods.

Paul Gribbon runs that site, and would be happy to help her find some traditional irish in her area.

Re: Calling Ontario!

Hey, that's wonderful Thom.

Many thanks for all the info.

Judging by that site there is plenty of music around there, sessions, clubs, musicians, instrument makers etc etc.

I'll pass all this info on to Maigan.

Thanks again.

Re: Calling Ontario!

Funny timing to read this, very interesting - and surprising!! I was just heading off for Thanksgiving dinner to my parents' place outside of INGERSOLL .. I had no idea that there was ANY ITM things going on there .. there certainly wasn't when I was growing up - it was all old time American-style fiddle, country, heavy metal ...
Now I'm curious - Will have to look up any info I can find on Maigan there!

As for Collingwood, lots around - the Glenelg band being an EXCELLENT example - just down the road to the west in Owen Sound there is a HUGE pocket of ITM music - and just 45 minutes south of there (or 45 minutes east of Ingersoll) is our area (Orangeville, Elora, Guelph, Cambridge) which has quite a bit of ITM - sessions, pubs, Irish and step dance schools, etc ...

Re: Calling Ontario!

Excellent. Thanks for sharing that with us. I hope you manage to meet up with some of the ITM players in that area.

Re: Calling Ontario!

Hi, this is Maigan Hominick's mum and I was surprised to see someone from Collingwood in on the discussion. Maigan was just at Collingwood at the fiddle and step contest and did very well. She took first in 18 and under fiddle, first in Open Stepdance, 2nd in duet fiddle and 2nd in Novelty fiddle, so nice little bundle of money for school. Maigan is 17 now, still playing but concentrating on school as well. She is hoping to get into med school. We are very proud to be part of the Jim McGill family in Ireland and hope to get back there soon for a nice trip. By the way if you come to Ingersoll again, our phone number is 485 3786 and we can all get together, Gord Elson and Joyce Elson as well for a good old caeli.

Hey 'Maigan Hominick's mum', I know the North Antrim branch of the Jim McGill family is very proud of young Maigan's marvellous musical achievements so far. This young lady obviously has a wonderful future &, already, an incredible track record!
