hello, i recently bought a tenor banjo and im goin mad lookin for some tab by Barney McKenna, im sure this sorta ting is posted every couple of days but there is 700 odd pages of topics to read through and iam a lazy man.
If anyone can help me out here with a link or watever it wud be greatly appriciated. Cheers.
Hi Conor,
The best thing to do is look through some of the tunes he has recorded and then search in the "tunes" section of this site, where you can get the tabs...
yeh i did that tunes search, and its good but i have to transcribe dat with a pen and paper as i cant read it proper yet, jus takes about 10 minutes 4 each song. It wud jus b easier if there was tabs somewhere, as i said im a lazy man.
Hey, why are you only trying to learn just Barney McKenna tunes? I'm sure you are aware that there are loads of great ITM Banjo players who have recorded wonderful playing over the years. I'd recommend that you listen to as many different players as you can, cause they all have their own style & you might find you prefer one style more than another.
Conor, do you mean actual tablature for the banjo as opposed to the "abc" and sheet music here?
If so, this would be harder to find. However, you could try Aiden Cossey's site which gives you tablature for the mandolin. The tenor banjo fingering is the same. http://www.paythereckoning.com/bookone.htm
Also, there are very few "Barney McKenna tunes". Mostly, he plays traditional Irish music which you can find here and is also played by other types of musicians including tenor banjo players.
As Ptarmigan suggests, you should also check out other good tenor banjo players e.g. Gerry O'Connor, Mick Moloney, Tony Sullivan to name but a few. Also, there's lots of Irish tunes which sound great on the tenor banjo and they've not all been recorded yet.
thanks for that, and ptarmigan, im looking for Barneys music because i can find most other peoples and because himself and the dubliners are my personal favorite. Thanks for yer help. Cheers
Once you listen to more banjo players you will realise what Ptar... is talking about.
Braney rocks but the other lads are good too. I like Seamus Egans playing on an album he did when he was (This is depressing) 16.
Why are ye automatically pressuming that i havnt listened to more players??? i have, i actually have a some Gerry O'Connor books. I have listened to other players and my favourite is Barney, its not because he is the most famous r anyhting.
Bit of help please
