Re: Looking for a tune

I'm looking for a recording of "Out on the Ocean" in the Key of G. There are lots of CDs available, but none I've located in that key. Boys of the Lough have it on **In the Tradition** in A, but I don't want to capo up, as I am just learning the Key of G, with dropped D tuning and capo-ing changed the feel of the guitar too much.

Re: Looking for a tune

Denos:
Ricketts hornpipe is often called Manchester hornpipe.
Sorry, I don't know how to post music, but it'sa fairly common
hornpipe and you should be able to find something using a search.

Re: Looking for a tune

Paddy Keenan does "Out On The Ocean" as a set. first G the A. (I Think) It's on 'Na Keen Affair'

Re: Looking for a tune

After I posted my request for Out on the Ocean, I learned that there are TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TUNES with the same name. The tunes are so different there is no possiblity of their being variations of the same tune.

One is in O'Neill's. That is NOT the version I am looking for. In fact, I have not even been able to find any written version of the version I want. However, like I said, it is played by Boys of the Lough on **In the Tradition.**

So Brad, is the Paddy Keenan version the same version the Boys of the Lough play? Or, that is, the version that starts on the downbeat: D- BB- (going up a sixth). The O'Neill's version starts on the 6th beat, and goes in a downward motion: E DCB BAG

Rickett's Hornpipe

I find this in the Fiddler's Fake Book. It's listed as "American," not as Irish. They also list five recordings of it in the Fakebook.

Re: Looking for a tune

Rickett's Hornpipe has been submitted. This is listed in O'Neill's as Sailor's Hornpipe, 2nd setting.

Out on the Ocean

I think the one I know & that Paddy Keenan plays is the one I just posted. I put in G the more common setting that is played around here. Let me know

Out on the Ocean

Thanks -- the one the teacher played is similar to the one Jeremy posted in May, too, Brad. I did discover that Out on the Ocean is on Na Keen Affair. It's unavailable at the library, or interlibrary loan, but is available by order for $16.95. There is dispute around Portland as to whether G or A is the most commonly played. This is so far a moot point with me, since I haven't been in a session where it has been played. Anyway, I have the notation in both G and A now, have located (thanks, Brad!) a recording in both keys, so can learn it in both keys when I finally around to ordering Na Keen Affair. Think I will try to get the library to order it.
