Charlie Lennon's River Road Reel

Charlie Lennon's River Road Reel

Does anyone have a transcription (ABC or otherwise) of the reel that Charlie Lennon wrote (and played) for The Waterboys' "When Ye Go Away" on their album "Fisherman's Blues"? I'll learn it off the recording if I have to, but it's pretty buried in the mix and I'm not sure I'll be able to catch it all...

As an aside, it's my understanding that Frankie Gavin did a version of that song with them when they were recording, playing an unidentified reel -- anyone know if there's a recording out there somewhere of that?

Re: Charlie Lennon's River Road Reel

There's definitely a recording of the Frankie Gavin out there somewhere, I'm sure. Bootlegs of the Fisherman's Blues sessions abound. The album was about two or three years in the making and they recorded pretty much the whole time, first in Dublin, then in Spiddal.

(I heard that Mike Scott got a heartfelt thank-you card from the people who manufacture reel-to-reel tapes for studio recordings).

Some of the Fisherman's Blues sessions were released recently as an official album but I don't think Frankie Gavin was on it.

You could try buying every Waterboys bootleg on O'Connell bridge until you find the right one :-)

Hee -- that could be an incredibly expensive way to find a bootleg, Jeremy, once you factor in flights and someplace to stay! But wouldn't it be a great time trying to find it!

Re: Charlie Lennon's River Road Reel

I am not familiar with this tune, but I have ordered a Charlie Lennon fiddle lesson video. If it happens to be on there, I will try to transcribe it. There is something like a two week waiting time on getting the video.

That'd be great, thanks, pearse, and do give us a review of the fiddle lesson video when you've had a chance to get through it!

Re: Charlie Lennon's River Road Reel

To save you a bit of trouble, I have Charlie Lennon's Musical Memories vol. 1 on tape, and it doesn't hae this tune on it. Perhaps he put it in volume 2.

Re: Charlie Lennon's River Road Reel

I doubt that it's in any tune collections, frankly -- the tune follows the structure of the song, and so it's not just a crooked tune, it practically spirals. :) I shall probably have to puzzle it out of the mix, I think...*sigh* But thanks!

Re: Charlie Lennon's River Road Reel

Zina, I received the Charlie Lennon video today. It does not come with any music, so I can't help you with this tune. I thought the tape would have some transcriptions, like Kevin Burke's videos, but no go.

Thanks, pearse. But let us know how you like the video!
