I'm just learning the Collier's as a jig & today found the reel version. I remember seeing a jig version of the Broken Pledge here too, & when I first started playing I was certain that Lark in the Morning & the Bucks were the same tune underneath. So - are there many tunes which are both jigs & reels? What are the best known ones?
Perhaps someone should smugly explain to all the bodhran players out there the difference between a jig and a reel, it seems therapuetic to melody nuts and there hasn't been much bodhran player bashing here lately.
"Hugie Travers" is probably the most famous jig into reel set. Jeremy points out "Connaughtman's Rambles" and "Silver Spear" have some similarity. For more obscure ones, try "The Cow that Ate the Blanket" into "Holloway Road Fling," and "The Rakes of Kildare" into "Peter Flanagan's," which is a northern version of "Down the Broom."
That's funny, no one's mentioned the two I thought were really famous -- "Leitrim Fancy" into "Sword in Hand" (Bothy Band recorded them, it's the start of the last track on their live album), and the jig and reel versions of "Road to Lisdoonvarna" (on Chieftains 3, I think).
On their first album Deanta play the "Gravel Road" as a jig. I think I heard once that Cathal McConnell (sp?) first converted the "Gravel Road" into a jig, but I could be mistaken on that.
Precognition going on again ? While playing with some friends last week, I was reminded of the Cork trio “Any Old Time” playing “The Geese In The Bog” as a reel, and was intending posting it. Will do it soon.
Sorry, but Pay the Reckoning, followed by Miss McLeod's Reel, although not really the same tune transposed in timing, they're quite close and go well together as a jig & reel set.
I came in thinkinking about single jig and double reels, so you get "Hag at the Kiln" with essential ly the same energy of Lads of Laois" or "Salamanca".

Re: Tunes which are both jigs & reels
At camp this summer Mairi Rankin taught a jig version of "Clumsy Lover". I had only heard the reel version previously.

I've heard Connaughtman's Rambles and Lisnagun Jigs played as reels. Quite good too.

Smash the Windows is in O'Neill's as a jig and a reel - the jig is catchier - a great tune.

Re: Tunes which are both jigs & reels
I've posted "The Geese In The Bog" as a reel without realising it. Look at :
http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/4967
"Any Old Time" kept it in "C", I think.
