tunes in southern California & reality TV

tunes in southern California & reality TV

Hey guys, I'm sitting at a 24 hour Kinko's in Newport Beach b/c the mansion doesn't have internet yet so this is my first net surf in almost 2 weeks. (!!)

Anyway, I'm dying for tunes down here. What's the dealio? Anything in Newport or Laguna Beach? Anybody want to come to the mansion & be on television? The producers know about this website (hi Ross!) & would any pub sessions around mind a camera crew following me in? I'll check back over the next few days, but it's been super hectic, even for me.... preferably respond on this thread, then I can contact you offline with phone #'s etc...

Yay!!!

xoxo Emilita

Hola Emilita
Love to come to your session but it's only a few thousand miles away. When does coverage of this show start and can we actually watch some on the internet?
A Mansion with no internet is a bit suss!

Re: tunes in southern California & reality TV

Hmm, a reality tv show featuring six female(i'm assuming) nurses living in a mansion together. I wonder how that would be pitched to an online market...

Only kidding. And while I may be a few hundred kilometers closer than Donough, I don't think I'll make there it either.

Re: tunes in southern California & reality TV

Rats, I should have read the fine print. "Second Sunday of every month"--which was yesterday, this month.

Might be worth trying anyway, though, they might host an extra one, just for you (and the free publicity).

Emily -- going to be in SF for Western Region Oireachtas the weekend before Thanksgiving and then the holiday with my family there -- maybe Pete and I could dip down south before returning back to Denver -- i'll check with him, it'd be fab to see you and have a few tunes!

Re: tunes in southern California & reality TV

HI Emily, Theres two great sessions in Santa Monica, which is a good hour or two from you, but the pub owner is a great guy, also alot of young musicians who I imagine might be up for an adventure and come to you, it's not that far and some have gigs as far away as san diego, so it's a possibility. GIve me an email and I'll try and put you in touch with someone who can tell you more. LA lawhistle@yahoo.com

Re: tunes in southern California & reality TV

A few folks from San Diego went to the Auld Dubliner yesterday, Michael Eskin for one.

Re: tunes in southern California & reality TV

Emilita,

We did have a pretty good turn out at the Harp Inn (Costa Mesa) this past Sunday. The session only meets once a month though...on the second Sunday.

I would also suggest Tom Giblin's in Carlsbad...only about 40 minutes south from Laguna. This is a weekly session on Sunday (4pm to 8pm) and you would be most welcome.

Cheers,

Tom

Re: tunes in southern California & reality TV

Finn McCool's in Santa MOnica is about an hour north of you. It is on the corner of Hill & Main in old Santa Monica. Take the 405 North to the 10 West > 4th street exit left > Pico right > Main Left... it's about a mile down on the right. The session takes place from 4 'til 7.

It would certainly be interesting! :)

Re: tunes in southern California & reality TV

Nicolas Buckmelter and other members from Ciunas live in Fullerton, very close to Newport Beach. I'm sure they'd love a tune or two with you. Plus they live in a really old mansion I'm told.

Re: tunes in southern California & reality TV

My live-in girlfriend was a nurse and she would leave her textbooks open on the livingroom or kitchen table all the time. I would wander in and start looking at them... and then I would start coming down with every symptom that was being described. I can't imagine being in a mansion full of nurses... I think I'd die.

Re: tunes in southern California & reality TV

If I were in Laguna Beach I'd be getting to the session at the SoCal Tionol in San Juan Capistrano on Saturday Oct 8. Looks like about 15 minutes from Laguna Beach. http://www.socalpipers.com/

Re: tunes in southern California & reality TV

God, Em, I wish you were doing this whole reality TV thing in Sydney. I would love to see the look on Dow's face when you came in with a film crew in tow.

Re: tunes in southern California & reality TV

Hi Craig!!!! Yes we had an small impromptu session (ie I crashed it at the last minute with a camera crew) at Acoustic Expressions, just myself, Craig & Michael Eskin & both of them were absolute sweethearts! THANKS!!!!! On a tip from Michael, we then proceeded to Dublin Square or something & saw Ciúnas live, wow!!!!! I bought their CD & made a special acquaintance with Nick the flute player, he plays a fully-keyed Olwell, & we're certain to have tunes in the future!!!! Thanks for all the support, & you'll be receiving more updates as they happen! Personally I'm looking forward to the Auld Sod on Tuesdays in San Diego, Michael says it's a good 'un! :)

to be continued....

Re: tunes in southern California & reality TV

You crashed a session with a camera crew?! Bwahahahahahahaahaha! That's priceless :-D

Is there even a precedent for that? No session etiquette guide I've ever seen has a listing for what to do if a reality TV star whooshes in with a camera entourage. Does one scowl? Preen? Play your crowd-pleaser party piece before anyone else can start their's, and then segue into a session standard so everyone joins in and they HAVE to include it in the final cut? Look embarrassed and shuffle one's feet? Ignore the camera? And when it's your round, do you include the cameraman and the guy with the boom mic?

Thank god I'm not there Em... I'd have a nervous breakdown! :-) :-)

when are we gonna start seeing any of this anyway? Inquiring busybodies want to know!

Re: tunes in southern California & reality TV

Well I did attempt to contact Michael earlier in the day via email & spoke to the staff at the store via phone, but our standard MO is just I do what I would normally do & the producers & crew follow me & ask anyone who was filmed to sign a release. If they don't, we can't use the footage. Or something. The truth is, I didn't play well at all, well it wasn't godawful, but I'm starting to get better at just letting the cameras be there. I wore jeans & an oversized grey t-shirt with the Munch painting "The Scream" but with a banjo in the background, so don't know how that will translate, but it is what I would normally wear esp for a first session (of course Michael played banjo, & flute & whistle & concertina & guitar... that's the beauty of having a session in a music store, eh?)... The crew says it generally takes 3 weeks of filming before the cast (of any show) really start to let their guard down. In terms of my personal growth, it's f*cking scary & amazing. I usually practice in the laundry room so I can close the door (plus good acoustics) but every now & then I'll have my eyes closed & bam! There's a camera in my face! Of course I'm practicing in my pajamas etc... Those of you who know I've had anxiety about playing in public in the past will understand what a monumental leap this is for my playing!!! Now if they would just stop taking us on all the crazy planned events so I could play more (j/k), I can't even tell you what they are, but they are amazing! Yesterday I think I drank 3 bottles of wine & the last thing I remember was being at an outdoor wine/jazz festival & drinking port out of shot glasses made of chocolate ie take a sip, nibble nibble.... wow. Now I'm going for a run on the beach, but as you can tell I finally have wireless internet at the mansion!!!!!!!

As for everything else, they keep everything a secret from us, even from the crew. I have no idea when it will air, where, in what format etc... Every Friday evening they leave us a cryptic note for Saturday saying something like 'bring beach gear & change of clothes for a nice dinner' & you are just whisked away. (Last weekend I ended up with some pretty cool cuts & bruises!) They may be doing something interactive online with the cast, but I'm not sure, will keep you posted. I am typing this from my patio overlooking the Pacific Ocean, rose bushes & orange trees & it doesn't even look like the United States but more like Tuscany or somewhere in Italy. In any case, yeah, this is wild wild wild.... we are planning a Halloween party & I'm going to host a session, so technically anyone who is reading this unless things go wonky, is invited to a masquerade session at our mansion, details to be worked out. :) :) :)
