hi! I'm going to a friend's wedding, and i wanted to play some tunes on the flute for him because he loves irish music... i was wondering if there are special tunes traditionnaly played for that occasion... Any ideas???
Hi Cecile! Hope all is well with you...anyway, I love playing weddings, they're fun! Everyone's always so happy. (Usually. *grin*)
The foregoing tunes are good, as well as the Wedding Jig. And if you're playing for any part of the ceremony, O'Carolan tunes are lovely for those bits because of the heavy classical influence -- Carolan's Draught makes a good processional/recessional, Carolan's Concerto does too, and The Fairy Queen is lovely for during the prayers or communion or as the bride walks down the aisle to her groom.
I asked Michelle McGregor (you probably met her as Michelle Huber) and Shannon and Matt to play Sour Grass and Granite for waltzes at our wedding ceili, and the guests loved it. And I love Jay Unger's Far Away as well.
If you want to go Scottish, there's The St. Kilda Wedding. There's also a set of three old Scottish reels now played in Nova Scotia, known as the Old Wedding Reels. The first of them is the title track of Arty McGlynn & Nollaig Casey's album, Lead the Knave.
One of the most beautiful slow airs that I've ever heard played at a wedding is "If Ever You Were Mine", which was recently written by Maurice Lennon, a great Irish fiddler formerly with Stockton's Wing. It can be found on JC'S Tunefinder website, although I'll try to post the ABC's for it.
Gaftai Baile Bui (I COULD get the accents right, but that's too much like work) is a very beautiful slow air that I think would be perfect for a) a wedding and b) a flute. I don't know it's traditional for weddings, but it sure is exquisite.
We used to play receptions all the time. Our lead singer had the audacity to sing "Maids When You're Young, Never Wed an Old Man." I like to play aires and those happy happy major key jigs at weddings.
Yes, while I like the pretty waltzes and airs, I try not to do TOO many of the minory, yearning, and rather bittersweet tunes, or it sounds like you're mourning at the wedding. *snicker* I should think you'd want to avoid tunes like "I buried my wife and danced on her grave" or at least not tell anyone why the band is snorting behind their instruments while they're playing it!
Wedding tunes??

Re: Wedding tunes??
"Give Me Your Hand" is a traditional choice. I heard Chris Norman played that on his wedding.

Re: Wedding tunes??
Haste to the wedding would be a funny choice,
considering the traditional interpretation of why people were hasting to the wedding.
I found an album that may help:
