Staying in Galway... and about this Fleadh in Donegal....
Staying in Galway... and about this Fleadh in Donegal....
Greetings sessioneers... I've transplanted myself to Galway City for the Autumn and look forward into running into some of you at the local sessions (which are many and frequent!)... I've been doing a fair bit of busking in town; as such, many folks stop to chat. A large percentage of them proclaimed it sinful of me to not attend the Fleadh this week in Letterkenny. I am just writing for opinionated input; in my estimation, a trip to Letterkenny could add up to an unpleasant expense for the pleasure of mad sessions (which can be found in this region all the time if one is lucky), some great concerts (regrettably missed but there will be others), competitive tuneing (not something I fancy at the moment), and various assorted craic (which ain't in short supply as it were...)
If anyone cares to add their input AND/OR throw out some advice as to west coast not-to-be-missed activities/events, let me know...
Any locals feel free to drop by my busking pitch of a sunny day; I'm the big guy with a mop of brown curls, a tarnished brass Burke, and a keyless Sam Murray blackwood...

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to post info about Galway-area sessions in the Session section. When I searched there today, I found only four listings in Co. Galway.

Its what you make it mo chara if we all think that then you are probably right, it is what we make it, I hope you change your mind, i dont often get the chance to go to fleadhs so i'm going to do my best to thoroughly enjoy this one.

I don't think it will be too expensive a trip if you are willing to travel no-frills. I recently travelled from Galway to Donegal Town and the bus fare wasn't bad. About 15 euros. I don't think it is much more, if at all, more expensive to get to Letterkenny which is only about 45 minutes to an hour further on the same bus (its the Derry bus). Then there is a hostel in Letterkenny run by a lovely nurse, Karen, called the Port Hostel about 2 minutes from the bus stop. Its by the An Grianan theater. I think the rate was around 15 euro a night.

Definitely, go to the fleadh if you can at all. Wish I could, but I was in Letterkenny two weeks early :(
