i have sonicstage, and know how to use it. but i dont want to deal with file permissions. how do i just do a direct line in? i know i need to get a cable, and plan to do so. what program would i have to use? i'm thinking that audacity would work. i'm also wondering if it is worth it. would the sound quality be the same if i used the line out (headphone) on the minidisc and then the microphone jack on my speakers on the computer, compared to just using usb through sonicstage? is there another way to do this that would have the same effect?
also, i'm assuming whatever software i would use (whether it be audacity or something else) i could separate and edit tracks.
i just spent the week at noel hill concertina camp and want to better manage my music so i can get the most out of it.
I have taken music off minidisc onto the computer using Audacity or Cooledit but plug the cable from the Minidisc into the the computer's "Line-In" socket rather than it's Mic input. Any recording software would do the job, but Audacity is good + free.
where is the line in socket? i mean, i know it would be on the back. i dont have time to check right now, but does it say line in or do i have to do it by trial and error?
Another way round the file permissions thing is to PLAY the piece in sonic stage, and record it it with some other piece of software on the computer such as audacity (you have select the input device differently). I use TotalRecorder from Polderbits and in tha I select "SUM"as the sound source and it records whatever is being sent to the sound card for output. (Make sure you turn off anything else that may get played eg windows beeps etc.
This should give better quality recording as it avoids the sound card amp. ie you stay digital ad far as possible.
(ps Line In is usally next to the MIC in, but not all sound cards have one.)
"also, i'm looking, and i dont know where in audacity to go to import from the line in."
You don't import the sound file into Audacity. Just make sure it is set to record from line in, press play on the Minidisc and press record on Audacity -and away you go.
If you can't see which is the Line in on your sound card see if it came with any documantation or check the specs online.
Good Luck
Just as Donough said.
And you cannot use sonicstage to listen to your mini-disc trough usb, it only lets you control the mini-disc.
Until now, there is as far as i know no way to import digtally from mini-disc to PC.
I hadn't tried recording using Audacity before but just did and it's great. Someone gave me a cassette I want to learn some tunes from, and I played the tracks into Audacity from a walkman cassette player. It seemed to be defaulted to mono, but under File...Preferences you change it to 2 channels (stereo) and you select "line in" rather than microphone. Plug into the blue socket on your pc, and turn the sound right up on the cassette player, and it recorded a treat. Then you export as an MP3, which you then import into Sonic Stage. From there you can load it on to your minidisk player. Always convert files to MP3 first before bringing them into Sonic Stage, and you have no restrictions. You can cut and paste the tracks or sections of them in Audacity and save them separately, and you can change the pitch too if needed.
