Hi everyone. I'm Tel, a 53 year old half-irish, half Ukrainian trad. music enthusiast from the North-West of England.
I've recently embarked upon the world of the Uilleann pipes and bought myself a practice set. I'm used to playing guitars, banjos, mandolins etc but never played a woodwind instrument before.
It's true what everyone says - it's got to be the hardest instrument in the world to learn (especially on your own) but I'm doing OK so far. It's fascinating stuff. Are there many piping members out there?
I'll be learning many of the tunes on here and keeping an eye on the discussions. In the meantime, catch you later.
Welcome! I'm one of several pipers here. The occasional piping thread will pop up here from time to time, but if you're looking for lots of piping discussion, try Chiff and Fipple Uilleann Pipes forum at http://chiffboard.mati.ca/
Long story, but it was all to do with the war. My dad was one of many who were found in an Italian POW camp at the end of the war. Because they had been forceably conscripted into the fighting the Russions by the Germans, they had German papers so they were arrested. Once it was realise that they were really on our side, and Instead of being returned to face Stalin, they were allowed to be sent to England where he met Ma.
I think the old Irish music is well in my blood, and probably the old slav stuff as well, to be honest. Hmm... perhaps I'll have a go at the Balalaika.
I'm in Barrow-in-Furness, the dumping ground of the world. It's only famous for polluting the Earth, e.g, had the largest Ironworks in the world, makes nuclear submarines, and gave anyone who walked past Wilkinsons and Forum 28 Legionaires Disease.
LOL. Barrow's not so bad, is it? Anyway, if you stand on the sea front, and I stand on Morecame sands, maybe you'll be able to hear me piping away across Morecambe bay.
Nice to "meet" you.
Breandan, has everyone here got a great sense of humour? A nice crowd, I think. Thanks everyone for the fine welcome.
