I thought of this while reading the "How old are we all?" thread.
How long have each of us been "on this board"? I realise that you can work it out roughly by checking the membership numbers but many of us "lurk" for quite a while before making any kind of contribution.
So, I thought it might be interesting to see what has motivated us all to get so involved(or not) here and whether or not it was a gradual thing.
Personally, I found this site in the days when it was just a tune database and joined quite early on(No 1066) when the site was changed into its present form in 2001. However, I never made any contributions at all until 2003 and I remember plucking up the courage to post my first discussion which was quite well received(Although some of the later ones weren't ). Nowadays, I submit all sorts of rubbish on an almost daily basis without any fear of the consequenses.
It took me much longer to submit my first tune. This was just over a year ago(well about 15 months ago) but this is probably the side of things, along with finding new tunes here, which has given me the most satisfaction on the site.
However, I still remember these earlier days well. Some well known names were very active in those days, eg Zina, Will, Dow, MG, Kerri(known as Fiddler on Vermouth back then), Pingu(Danny), and Tanya Lee Terohoshi. All are still very much to the fore with one notable exception.
John J you are so racist you ought to be ashamed of yourself, you need to shut up, so just shut up! - anyway you've been here so long you're going mouldy. I remember Kerri as Fiddler on Vermouth back then as well. I remember using this site and reading it lots when it first started but I didn't bother posting until sometime in 2001 (I think). I joined round about the same time as Pingu*. Ironic that isn't it? Pingu sounds like such an innocent name...
"Pingu".
He-heh.
One imagines a cute little penguin flapping its little flippers up and down and squeaking cute yet unintelligible things through its tiny little cute, orange, trumpet-like beak, whereas what one actually gets is, well, Danny...
just joined here yesterday but have been visiting the site for tunes for a long time. Just wanted to talk to other musicians and people who have the same interests as me.i live in england in near nottingham which is known to be the second worst place to live in britian. Its All f**** crappy music round here and all the teenagers are all goats and sheep and everyone just copies eachother. So this website i suppose lets me express my feelings for irish music because its virtually impossible to do it where i live.
I think it was early 2004 when I began my meteoric rise to fame here on the yellow board - it seems like I've been here forever (probably does to some of you, too, I realise).
Anybody remember that really sinister penguin in Wallace and Gromit? That's more how I see Danny...
I did post a discussion on something similar to this some time ago for what it's worth there was some interesting obsessive facts that came out in the wash. Especially read Will's post:=> http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display.php/4332
Me? Well I used to frequent Jeremy's precursor and have been here ever since but have not been as prolific as others. I seem to usually go on when no-one else is posting. And I am a slow typer.
I think it was 2002?? All the years mix up together.
How can you actually find out what number you are? John J is number 1066 - how do you find that out?
Okay - Geography is not my strong point but isnt Nottigham in Nottighamshire? And if so isnt that where Sam Proctor is from? And if so then the music cant be that bad there can it? Sam is one of the best fiddle players Ive ever heard....Please correct me if I'm wrong S McMullen.
I joined the fray just before I went to my first ever session, which was round November 2003. Funny how the music and yellow websites can take over one's life...
I think I joined just after picking up my first whistle in Edinburgh. It's probably around 3 years and a half ago. I was young and stupid....
Anyway, *Pingu* has recently turned into *Typical Feckless Weegie Boor.* It's still Danny though. I think the most confusing name changes have been done by *quirl.* I know he used to be *David* or *Mountain Goat.*
I also miss Tanya. I still wonder about her freezer. I only check in here to find out how to bow hornpipes, find out what atrocities Jack has committed, and how Danny's user name has morphed. I suspect that there are a great number of lont-time lurkers who just can't keep up with the high-level posting performances required.....
I think were in the 19000 range or something, flutietootie.
I joined over a year ago, (i think) having heard of the place in the session i go to, and tracked it down.
By then it seemed enormous, and its only now iv got used to the name changes, the different personalities on here and topics from the sublime to the ridiculous.Much like my usual session really........
I have a reminder of my name and password from October of 2004 but I used a different name (eddytmsg) without a bio for quite a while previous to that.
I rarely do more than lurk but I have posted a couple times lately. maybe I'm coming out of my shell?
I started lurking in lateish 2003, and actually joined some time in early 2004; March or thereabouts, I think. But I'd been snagging tunes for several months before I started to lurk in the discussions area, so on the whole it's been over 2 years that I've been visiting, one way and another.
Well, I actually have a much later number, because I remember getting the e-mail from Jeremy about the site and then not doing anything about it for a week. Pretty hilarious, some of those first posts. I particularly laugh now at me and Will circling each other warily...
I also joined yesterday and if 36 others join up after me, the number of members will reach 20K. I'm quite the newbie to the whole session-thing, but I've always been fond of Irish music and I'm delighted to be able to indulge in it with so many good musicians. I've been singing at the session at Dubliner in Oslo, but I'm moving to Liverpool next week, and hope to join up at Pogue Mahones at wednesdays
I was so happy to have found this site so I joined almost immediately. It was in February , must have been 2003 then. I like my number because it's easy to remember.
I have come in on forays for tunes for years. I only started browsing "discussions" this year and lurked backwards for a couple of months, where I was spending more time searching out the old discussions, than I was reading them. So I signed up to see if it was easier to navigate the old one's. Then I discovered "downloaded" tunes have the variations in the comments, built in. Yippee !!!!
And like many before me, only chipped in so I could see my number. I'm guessing 14-15K.
How long have we all been here?
