Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

John, it may appear to you that it's a waste of time and money to blast people into space just so that they can repair tiles on their own rocket and bring back all the used bog paper from previous expeditions, but your life would be very different without the 'spin-off' inventions from the wonderful space research.
How would you like to live in a world that still had no Teflon knickers?
No widgets in your can of Guinness.
And that other thing.
Whatever it was.

There's Teflon knickers?

Yup.
No more hours of scrubbing with wire wool and Ajax - they just wipe clean ....

Och, most Scots wear knickers except in Morningside. :-)

Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

The Newfie Space Program - we're going to land an expedition on the Sun!

"You can't do that! Sure, you'll all burn up when you land!"

No, no - we're smarter than that. We're going to do at at night!

(Replace Newfie with Irish / Kerry / Belgian / whatever doesn't offend)

Aye, a' suppose yer richt enough John J.

I'm not sure if we ever met in Sandy Bells, Dick. Your face is familiar, though.

I didn't play anything in those days(not that I'm that great now) but I probably frequented the pub at the same time as yourself.

Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

Well, these new-fangled teflon knickers may SOUND all right, but they're nothing on the old knickers. The old knickers had style and class and feel coming out of their ears. Or whatever. Someday all the young whippersnappers will have no idea of what it was like to have our old knickers, and what a shame that'll be! Keep the old knickers alive! Or whatever.

:)

Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

"How would you like to live in a world that still had no Teflon knickers?"

Teflon was invented at Dupont in 1938 as a side effect of working on refrigeration systems.

Velcro was invented in France, circa 1940, by emulating burrs sticking to a dog's coat.

Tang was a common feature in American housholds before Sputnik.

There is T-foam I suppose, which, ironically, we never used in the space program, because it was a failure.

Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

About the only major benefit of the space program is our enhanced ability to track and predict weather, resulting in more efficient (and more bountiful) farming. Sadly, we don’t seem to have the will to properly distribute the harvest.

Hey, and what about Chinese instant noodles? Heh? I was raised on that! They were created for the needs of Soviet cosmonauts, as I heard.

Oh, US Space Programme. Now I get it. All right. Yeah. I mean, is it that far from the percussion. Or isn't it. I'll get me coat.

Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

On a more serious note, though, what about things like telemetric equipment, angioplasty, solar energy use, variety of sensoring technologies used for environmental monitoring, that came directly from US or any other space programmes? I wouldn't name that a "minor benefit".

Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

Regardless of how you personally feel about the space program (I’m militantly ambivalent), there’s no denying the size of the impact, once you start trying to tally it up. The spin-off results are so varied and widespread that we take them for granted. The boost to research in computers and electronics was enormous and greatly accelerated the development and miniaturization of everything with electronic components or a computer chip in it, which includes (deep breath) cell phones, portable phones, medical devices, calculators, energy-efficient refrigerators, microwave ovens, CD players, instrument tuners, card readers, every automobile built in the past twenty years (with their modern safety features), barcode scanners, cash registers, …

There was also very broad societal impact, such as a huge increase in direct and indirect education subsidies and employment opportunities for the first wave of the baby boom. After the Apollo program was terminated, the science and technology job market went into a depression until the momentum of the microprocessor revolution saved it.

Not to mention the direct results, like global positioning systems, satellite communication systems of all kinds, greatly enhanced knowledge of our solar system and universe, the emerging ability to detect and head off disastrous asteroid collisions (finally, an unequivocal benefit!).

The total impact has been so big that we can’t begin to quantify it. And that’s only the potentially good side of it. The dark side is harder to trace, but includes some serious pollution problems generated by the computer/high-tech industries, the unknown effects of the ever-increasing intensity of radio waves penetrating our bodies and the horrors of high-tech war and space-based weapons.

But, of course, it pales beside the damage done to musicial sensibility by the bodhran. ;-)

Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

Damn it Kris, you beat me to it!!

Of course the space programme has also forced the Americans into inventing all sorts of new fangled devices to cope with problems - like the high-tech pen that can be used in a zero-gravity environment - very important for serious space work - and millions spent on its development. The commies (being the cheapskates they are, sorry, were) used a pencil. How wierd!! :-)

Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

Actually, I was just talking with a friend last night who really is an Internation Man of Mystery, and we were describing things that the US Gummint has given people very pricey grants to pursue, really weird stuff that no one could ever think would ever ever EVER work (like, transporting people by telepathy), simply to see if they came up with any interesting spinoffs, because, believe it or else, often they do.

Your tax dollars at work.

Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

The things that are invented due to Star Trek... amazing really.

OK the teleporter still needs to be invented but the syringe that they had that injected without a needle exists now. After my operation on my ingrowing toe nail the other week I am really looking forward to that becoming more popular (although teleporting the offending bits of nail away would be better still.)

Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

yeah, I read once where some medical equipment company asked for the little beeping sound that the communicators made, because the sound cuts through everything without huge amounts of fuss and they wanted to use it as an alarm sound for some piece of machinery.

# Posted on August 9th 2005 by Zina Lee

Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

Yes I think I prefer mobile. I wouldn't worry about it though Bob. There may be many things the Americans can't spell like colour, theatre, programme or gaol but the Irish can't spell Ceilidh so why worry? ;-)

# Posted on August 9th 2005 by No Cause For Alarm

So Zina - when are we going to see these modern medical miracles employed by Dr Dick. The show is being repeated on UK television now.

A Cell Phone is a Mobile, but a Mobile is not necessarily a Cell Phone.

Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

Ye's surely must've heard the very old one about the 2 astronauts who landed on the moon. After they nailed up the flag, took cheese, sorry, moon rock samples, etc, Neil says to Buzz,
"Fancy a pint?"
"What here, on the moon?"
"Yeah, I saw a pub sign over there on that crater."

So they duly went and quaffed a few jars. Whilst sitting in the boozer, rather bored as it happens, Neil again says to Buzz,
"Well, what do you think of this place, then?
"Hmmm.....it's ok I suppose....but it's got no atmosphere"

Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

"How would you like to live in a world that still had no Teflon knickers?"

Teflon was invented at Dupont in 1938 as a side effect of working on refrigeration systems.

KFC, there aren't really any 'Teflon Knickers' - it was what we call a joke.

But I guess it's not funny any more...

But at least we know that ...
'Teflon was invented at Dupont in 1938 as a side effect of working on refrigeration systems.'

Interesting that.

That's very clever, that you you had that information in your head. I know lots of things that you'd know nothing about, but I guess I'll save them up till you you make a joke about them, then I can deflate your joke and sound really knowledgable...

Or maybe just look up the stuff I don't know on Wikipedia and make it seem like I'm really brainy ..

;-)

Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

GFK = Gushet Free Knickers, because you don't need a gushet because they're made of teflon so you can wipe them clean etc etc. Invented by wee Jimmie Dupont the Gorbals stud in 1938. The same year he invented Kleenex Man-Size. Now we know who the international man of mystery really is.

Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

"KFC, there aren't really any 'Teflon Knickers' "

Yes, I'm afraid there are, and, as it happens, astronauts are among the people who are known to wear them.

Teflon impregnating fibers makes them fire retardant, moisture retardant, but breathable, nonstick, of course, and thus abrasion resistant as well as nonabrading, and, ummmmm, stain resistant.

Just the thing for knickers, especially if you're going to be sitting in a bomb for days at a time without being able to change them.

If you believe...

I suppose without the space program, we would never have had that REM song about Andy Kaufman... and therefore at least one good Jim Carrey Film. I'll drink to spin-offs.

"Hey Andy, did you hear about this one? Tell me, are you locked in the punch?
Hey Andy, are you goofing on Elvis? Hey baby, are we losing touch?
If you believed they put a man on the moon, man on the moon

Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

I don't think enough research is being done on percussion in space (preferably outside the space station and obviously without space-suits).
Research into the effect of near-zero gravity on shakey eggs would benefit mankind, and NASA would also need to work on goat-skin that would withstand the sub-zero temperatures.

Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

"and NASA would also need to work on goat-skin that would withstand the sub-zero temperatures"

is that the same NASA that couldn't get the fuel gauge to work on the shuttle, and couldn't stop bits of foam falling off on take off. And sent a spaceship up after 2 years of soul searching about the quality of the thermal tiles THEN when it was up there they noticed that the said tiles hadn't been grouted properly.

Good grief Geoff - if you leave it to them they'll probably come up with a bodhran that doesn't work at all!

Re: What is the biggest waste of time? The US Space Programme or Percussion at a session.

I saw a harmonica in the Smithsonian Museum that had been into space in the Apollo program, one of those wee little Hohners with only 8 notes. I guess they had to settle for simple tunes like Oh Susannah and Sullivan's Polka. But things have advanced (or retreated) since then. I heard that someone brought one of those Martin backpacker guitars on the shuttle, so now we know that the pesky accompanists have even made their way beyond the planet, before even a fiddle, flute, accordion or pipes.

The US of A don't have a space programme, unless there are shadows and winds blowing on the moon.

Take percussion out of "Moving Hearts" "Horslips" "The Who" "Cream" "Taste" "Altan" and millions of others and you don't have ITM or any type of music.
