Seanie, I was curious about that as well. Does anyone know who was on the faculty?

I know that Joe Burke was at attendance teaching accordion. My daughter would have loved to have gone to his class's. But I haven't heard anything aout it at all.

Re: McPeakes International Festival (World Championships)

The International Summer School was great this year, a great buzz around the tech were the classes etc took place.

I took class from Joe Burke - absolutley brilliant!!!! The classes had a great vibe about them, with great musicians on board delivering first-class workshops. Tutors this year included Joe Burke, Anne Conroy-Burke, Seamus Tansey, Paul Phillips, Patricia Daly, Francie McPeake, Robert Watt etc

The afternoon performances were a great surprise - each day a different combination of tutors got together and gave an informal performnace for the students and public, in the wonderful surroundings of the great hall - great acoustics and ambience.

The evening recitals were very enjoyable, with fiddle, accordion, accompaniment, flute/tin whistle and uilleann pipes. One of the highlights was the Uilleann Piping recital with great performances from Finbar McLaughlin, Patrick Davey, Patrick O'Hare, and 2 real gems - an appearance from Robert Watt on highland pipes and a great duet from Francis and Francie McPeake to finish. Each recital featured the best of both local musicians and tutors alike, such as Patrick Davey, Brendan Mulholland, Gerard Thompson, Mairead Forde and Sean O'Kane.

The International Summer School is a great week, with the focus on the music id say rather than the 'boozin' culture of some festivals at the minute.

All the best.

Kevin.

Sounds brill!!! Kevin. Robert Watt is an amazing talent heard him several times in the past and good to hear the drink left out of the music for a change. It can only lead to a wider acceptance of trad music, as the drink culture has always been closely associated to trad music.

Re: McPeakes International Festival (World Championships)

Kevin - sounds like you work for the McPeakes! Very similar speak to the leaftlets etc. Maybe Im just cynical!
I heard from someone who attended that the attendance was very low and while the music and standard of tuition was good enough, it was as badly organised as last year! I hadn't seen any advertisements or anything for it so I suppose maybe thats why people where not there.
Cant see it lasting at all. Someone mentioned the old McPeake blarney money making schemes on a discussion I read a while back.....seems like another one!
I wonder where the compilation album that the winners of last years championships where supposed to get a track on is? Anyone heard it? The big winner was supposed to get an album made with Steve Cooney - did it happen?
Not convinced at all by the whole thing.

Re: McPeakes International Festival (World Championships)

Cynical is not the word. Music and standard of tution was "good enough". Any staff which includes a legend like Joe Burke is deserving of a less begruding endorsement than the one bmusic just made.
I don't know the McPeakes, but that post from bmusic came pretty darn close to character assassination. I must need to be busier at work if I am finding the time to respond to some of this stuff:)

Re: McPeakes International Festival (World Championships)

Maybe I should phone the McPeakes up and ask them for a job!!!! lol bmusic - get real.

Shaw I agree, even replying to those type of posts is a waste of time.

People deserve respect, those who claim to be interested in Irish Traditional Music - as bmusic obviously does considering he is a member of this site to begin with, should be respecting the families and people who have kept traditional music alive and who are actively promoting Irish traditional music.

Re: McPeakes International Festival (World Championships)

Sorry, i really didnt mean that to be a character assasination. I don't know any of the McPeakes, i was merely repeating what has already been said on this board a few times. I know more than a few people who have said that the McPeakes these days just play on the respected name for various things but again, as i don't know them i shall disregard the speculation of others.
Anything that brings more music and musicians to the North should of course be encouraged it is done in the correct way.

I genuinely am interested in hearing the winners albums from last year - anyone know when/if they are available.

Re: McPeakes International Festival (World Championships)

Wow! bmusic,
The tail seems to be firmly between the legs just now, but come home - all is forgiven. I have known all the McPeakes for a long time. Believe it or not, but there is a tradition in the McPeake family, or seems to be, that the 1st born son of a McPeake is named Francie. When my children were going to Clonard there was "m'Da Francie" - he was the old granda - and there was "Old Francie" - mDa's son, and then there was, and still is, Francie himself and his son - who would be my son Tony's age now about 37 - 38 and I'll bet there is now his son Francie. Ask Paddy Davey. He will veify every word - albeit long winded - that I have said. So bmusic, stop biting your tounge. We all do and say daft things from time to time. I give you 10 marks for your apology, especially in front of all your peers (and on this site, that is to be commended).

The music was brilliant, the people were lovely and the evening recitals i thought were out of this world, because of it i have joined the school of music in belfast and i would encourage everyone to go to the mcpeake festival this year.
