I'm coming up on my second year in college in north carolina, and lately I've been thinking about creating an independent study in the Irish culture, particularly music. I'm wondering if anyone might have any suggestions for some good schools in Ireland to look at? Thanks
I second Pickndude's advice - talk to Mick! I did, at this year's Augusta Irish Week in Elkins, WV. He has been on the staff there for 20-some years, as well as teaching at University of Pennsylvania, NYU, etc.
This is what he told me: "for someone who is interested in studying Irish traditional music at a college level, there is no other choice but the University of Limerick."
He didn't mean that in a bad way, he just ment that it was the best he could think of. Of course there's Cork, Trinity College, and others to look at, but I'm in the same boat (well sort of, I'm a senior in high school and I'm looking to study ITM in college), and since talking to Dr. Moloney, I've given serious thought to UL and am researching it right now. Looks great!
Check out University College Cork, or UCC. I have heard great things about the program. Cork is a lovely place and is filled with excellent music and musicians.
For songs then you could do worse than talk to John Moulden, a highly respected collector, author, editor, etc of traditional song, especially from Ulster. http://www.ulstersongs.com/
any suggestions?

Re: any suggestions?
Try contacting Mick Moloney, a superb musician as well as a musicologist and folklore PhD. His website is:

I'm sure he could offer good advice or at least point you in the right direction.
Good Luck!

I am also looking around and UL requires a minimum GPA of 3.1 I could never get that at the rate I am going.
