1. When instrumentalists and singers of all stripes, histories, and capabilities discover ITM, it's often similar to a religious conversion (e.g., "ITM is the way, the light!" "I will play no other kind of music foreverrmore!" "Brother, have you heard the way of ITM lately?"
2. They vacuum up information about it., CDs, books, magazines, websites, etc., particularly that put out by the most advanced practitioners.
3. Their Bible is O'Neill's, Mel Bay's Irish Fiddling, etc.
4. They gather together in dark, secretive places to study the holy writ (tunes) and for fellowship.
5. They share communion (Irish brown bread and Guiness).
6. They make pilgrimages to the Holy Land (Ireland).
7. Over time, philosophical and spiritual differences among the adherents develop (e.g., fundamentalists, mainline, ecumenical, new-agers).
8. And finally, being simply human, after kvetching about their brethern endlessly, sessions split to form new sessions.
And don’t forget the most significant facet of religion... We war against ourselves and those of other faiths in a vein, pious attempt to prove we know the real truth.
J C (before he set up his tunefinder web site) said "I bring not peace but the sword. There will be bodhrans, rumours of bodhrans, and shakey eggs in diverse places".
This thread is shallow, heretical and blasphemious, and I've just issued an ottery fatwa against all who have participated in it. So stay away from the river banks if you value your ankles and don't want to wake up with fish in your pockets.
Aiyeeee!!!
More foolish blasphemy. Highstrung - You have now forfeited the 20 virgins who would have fawned over you and tended to your every (yes, even that one) need in Paradise. And for what? To score some ridiculous point on the Yellow Pages of Sin? I hope it is worth it!
20 virgins - down the drain!!
Aiyeeee!!!
Twenty you say! Well there's Drowsy Maggie, Roaring Mary, the Red Haired Lass, the Maid on the Green but what about the other 16? Maybe these maids can be found in Mount Cisco!
Well, then there's Maggie in the Wood, The Maid Behind the Bar, and how do you think The Old Torn Petticoat got to be so ?
Also, High-strung, it's WahWahs used in Soul Music, not Fatwahs.
But yes, it's the people that are the trouble in the music, if we could just get rid of them all would be well in ITM Heaven.
I had a wahwah in my youth. I played a Strat, and it was nice and loud. A fat sound. A fat wah wah. And we didn't play soul music, we played disco, R&B, etc., and we grooved rather intensely. And now my beard is grey, I'm just as much a fool as I ever was, and I wear wool, pick at my ears, cuss at God, and play ITM.
We're all pains in the ass, broken people, sinners even. Forgive, children, forgive. Life is short. Go and play your tunes, and love your neighbor, even those who play spoons.
When I woke up this morning,
I heard a stubborn sound.
What that sound was,
was the sound of a thousand lost pipes.
I’m talkin’ about the pipes of all
those pipes of all men and woman
Seeking divine sound.
But shall not find,
Because it tooooooooooooooo late.
Too Late Ya!
Too late for those men and women.
the lives they once chose not to follow…
now…
Don’t be lost when the time comes.
For the day of the tune comith….
Ooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…………….
Good point Showaddy.
There must be SO may bodhrans in the world, most painted with shamrocks or printed with Guinness adverts. Where do they all go?
Ditto with tin whistles - like, every tourist who goes to Ireland for the first time buys one, with a little book on how to play a few tunes that nobody loves any more.
What’s needed here is some sort of massive recycling operation .. Bring back the drums from the Euphrates! Give the Babylonians a bit of peace and quiet, they’ve had enough quite enough shock and awe without having to put up with bodhrans as well!
Where have all the bodhrans gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the bodhrans gone
Long time ago
Where have all the bodhrans gone
Gone to tourists, every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?
You lot are hilarious. I idly decided to read this whole thread over and was convulsed by the whole thing.
Note to all: the Nonsense on this site is the best part!
Now, I'd better go get the house ready for making a ceili tonight. Chris Smith (and Angie) are here -- they're currently up gawking at The Stanley ("guess who's coming to dinner!") and driving the Continental Divide. We've had some lovely tunes with them and look forward to more tonight. I think I shall make that Indian-spiced cauliflower soup.
ITM as a religion?
ITM as a religion?
Consider the parallels:
1. When instrumentalists and singers of all stripes, histories, and capabilities discover ITM, it's often similar to a religious conversion (e.g., "ITM is the way, the light!" "I will play no other kind of music foreverrmore!" "Brother, have you heard the way of ITM lately?"

Sound about right?

Re: ITM as a religion?
It's the same with Jazz, Rock and Roll, Opera, Golf, Off-Road Biking, Surfing, Botany, Ornithology.. . . . .
It's because of the people, not the subject.

Re: ITM as a religion?
No, ITM is not religion.. its far more important than that

Re: ITM as a religion?
Oh yes we do!
Turning it around, wouldn't it be fair to say that religious freaks are just obsessive-compulsives, the same way as 'the music' freaks are?

Are they "people who hate freedom" or maybe even ... "evil-doers?"

LOL -- Mark, I love you. The thought of bitten ankles on the river banks and lack of virgins in the afterlife is a persuasive one.
Anyway, I liked Dave's first answer.
