Calling all young folkies in the North West!

Calling all young folkies in the North West!

I have just this minute set up a web site to try and bring together any young (15-21 yrs) folkies in the North West of England. It is in very early stages at the moment, but the idea is to eventually organise sessions, ceilidhs etc. for us young folkies in that area. Please take a look at it and tell me what you think of the idea, and if you are indeed a young folkie in the North West, then please get involved!

What a shame! I can't join you: I'm 26, and my second hometown is Leeds, West Yorkshire. Good luck anyway!

Re: Calling all young folkies in the North West!

Great to know you're alright Nick!

A propos young folkies Madelon, then I don't have so many folk club/session contacts so much, but if you mean Irish then do get in touch with Nick who has posted his replies here.

If that fails, then get in touch with Sean MacNamara, Terry Coyne or Tony Gibbons, who will give you some great leads.

Tony especially has an incredible knowledge of the folk scene in general and has over the years given so much to encouraging younger players.

Good luck!

Re: Calling all young folkies in the North West!

i'm sure Yorkshire counts as the NW! I only specified this area because it would make it easier to arrange stuff, but I really want to hear from anybody who's up for it!

Good luck with this Madelon. I'm far too old, but I applaud your effort.

Re: Calling all young folkies in the North West!

sounds grand. i'm up for it, although it would be better for me to wait till september as i'm working my ass off before i start my new term because i don't get enough student loan.
the ceilidh band would be a good idea. i can get loads of work for a ceilidh band from the med school but we'd need a decent caller.

What a great idea, Madelon! Too bad I'm from across the Atlantic Ocean, I'm 16 and would love to join you, but the distance factor is a problem :(

Re: Calling all young folkies in the North West!

Fiddlekit, maybe we should look at setting up a folk music group over here for the same age group. I know of some other highschoolers in the Crowley area who would be interested in starting a group of like minded youth in the Central Texas area. We should at least think about it.

Re: Calling all young folkies in the North West!

Musicfan - just been looking at your biog. You have taken the time to learn the dulcimer (hammered and mountain!!) and the bowed psaltry and yet you have not learned the guitar yet??!! Wow!! - Gives me an idea for a thread.

Good luck with your plans folkiemad. I grew up in the North West and there was very little folk music around (mind you it was Knutsford - nothing interesting there). I definately missed out.

Re: Calling all young folkies in the North West!

Musicfan, that would be great, but are there enough of us in the area? Even you and I are pretty far apart... It would be cool, though!

Re: Calling all young folkies in the North West!

We might not be able to get together all the time, but you're only about an hour to an hour and a half from me. I've come across others in our area. We'd probably have to keep it to general folk music and not just Irish Music and we might want to extend the "age limit" to include anyone under thirty or something. We could at least see about setting up a list, think about it and let me know.

Fiddlekit, musicfan, I"m way to old but have a vested interest in sessions west of the Metro-mess. If you want to thrash this out offline e-mail me at spanishpipedream42 (you know) yahoo (you know) com.
