About those 7/8 tunes...

About those 7/8 tunes...

How does one go about playing? From what I'm hearing in my head, is it basically half a measure of a jig and half a measure of a reel put together? I try playing it and I kind of just go blah =\ Can someone tell me more about them? They a bit of a mystery to me..

Stumped in RI =O

Re: About those 7/8 tunes...

For most 7/8 tunes it helps to count "1,2,3,4 - 1,2,3" in each bar.

Re: About those 7/8 tunes...

say the following repeatedly without putting a gap in between saying it

can i have a pint of beer, can i have a pint of beer, can i have a pint of beer, can i have a pint of beer, can i have a pint of beer, can i have a pint of beer

That is 7/8!

Re: About those 7/8 tunes...

lol , Can I have a pint of beer is alot more fun to say than 1 and 2 and 1,2,3 et cetera.
Funny thing. I myself jsut started trying to figure out 7/8 fiddlinviolinin, Heres another cool thing if you can get 7/8 then 9/8 and 5/8 will come easy! Good luck.Hows life treating you by the way?

Re: About those 7/8 tunes...

I myself have a question, is it better to put the accent on the 1 or the 3 in the secound half the measure?

Re: About those 7/8 tunes...

Love the "Can I have a pint of beer" thing!

There's a similar one for 5/8: "hippopotamus" said repeatedly. Just don't do it out loud walking along the street - they'll lock you up!

Re: About those 7/8 tunes...

5/8 divided 3+2

pour me some vodka, pour me some vodka, pour me some vodka

5/8 divided 2+3

I need alcohol, I need alcohol, I need alcohol

7/8 divided 3+2+2

I am an alcoholic, I am an alcoholic, I am an alcoholic

9/8 divided 3+2+2+2

give me a pint of bitter mister, give me a pint of bitter mister, give me a pint of bitter mister

Re: About those 7/8 tunes...

Hey Banana512! Life's pretty smooth, but I bet it'd be smoother if I were in Ireland ;P Et tu?

Anywho, hmm, confusing still.. Oh well, I think all I need to do is sit down and take these babies apart. W00t. Oh by the way, tuning down to Bb is possibly the best thing that could ever happen in my life besides Ireland =]

Cheers,
Armand

Re: About those 7/8 tunes...

Sure, I'll take a pint.

Re: About those 7/8 tunes...

"Can I have a pint of beer" - risks (nay encourages) the word beer being made into two syllables: Can I have a pint of be-er.

You might be better off with "Can I have a bag of chips"

(But then we'd get into the old thing about the yanks thinking that chips are fries, and crisps are chips etc.)

bbrownes idea works if you get the "seven" down to one syllable - "point eight sev'n five of a tune".

Re: About those 7/8 tunes...

you're being a bit pedantic there, could easily say can i have a bag of chi-ips. Just say every word exactly as they are meant to be said. No one goes into a pub and asks for a pint of be-er, it's always one straight word beer with no addition. Was just equating rhythms with everday speech cos that's where they came from. If you say the phrase as it is normally spoken you will get 7/8. Say it staccato and the rhythm will be even more marked

Getting the word seven down to one syllable?!! Who talks like that? You are just confusing things here showaddydadito.

Re: About those 7/8 tunes...

Hey, I always say it "be-er" it's my accent. But if we're really splitting hairs, no one ever goes into a pub and asks for a pint of beer. You say bitter, or lager, or guiness, or bud, or eighty bob, or heavy, or stella, or IPA, or scruttocks old vegetable stock, or whatever

Re: About those 7/8 tunes...

but on the question of where to put the accent? that's the fun of these uneven timings. You put the accent where the tune asks you to put it and quite often this means disguising the regularity of it. And this should also be true of more straight forward tunes. If you accent them where the tune asks rather than in a regular place every bar (I really hate that back beat thing in reels for example) then you'll get much better music

Re: About those 7/8 tunes...

Frisbee,
can I have a pint of stout?
That solves the issue and also means it's your round.

Re: About those 7/8 tunes...

i personally use the 1-2 1-2 1-2-3 technique, it works for me, but then again i am a guitarist :P

Re: About those 7/8 tunes...

The Balkan music we danced to in college was counted 1-2, 1-2, 1-2-3 or 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2 with stresses on the ones. 5/4 can make the same shift and be either 1-2, 1-2-3 or 1-2-3, 1-2. Its a subtle difference, but it matters -- and it can shift within the tune, just to drive you really mad!

Re: About those 7/8 tunes...

I've been playing a piece called "Laride a six temps" (Breton) which (hence the name) is in 6-time but does occasional bars in 5/8 and 7/8. Wild. Wierdly I never thought of counting - I just worked my way through it and once I'd done that I sort of "got it" and didn't have to count after that. However, I was playing the harp so could do empases on certain beats in the left hand (the 6/8 sections have empases on 1,2,3 and 5).

Seemed OK - just best not to think about it too much!!
