that produces such passions, seemingly becomes a religion and / or way of life?
For the first time in a couple of months I’ve got a day in which work is slow and I’m musing. I’ve spent a few moments going through some discussions I’ve missed and find myself chuckling and thinking I must be missing something. Backers or no, Pub/Session etiquette, reels reels reels, jigs are for wussies, shame on those who earn a living from this music, etc….
I enjoy the music and am enjoying the slings and arrows of learning how to play it. But I’ve yet to be “born again” by the Irish Traditional Music spirit. Maybe I just need a visit to the “holy land”.
I don't think it is unique to Irish Music (though of course it is the highest incarnation of mucis); I bet if you went to sites dedicated to bluegrass, old time, jazz, cajun, etc. you would find much the same thing.
Heck one person posted the day that they went to a Taoist site and found the same thing going on.
Or a visit from the IRA.... Now the Irish Republican Air-guitar players. Kidding...
For me this music (specifically the stuff I hear in Canada) *bit* me at an early age. It called something in me that other types of music just didn't. You know what... it's impossible to describe without getting all mushy and stupid so I'm going to stop. If I were to answer with anything, for me, playing this music gives me the same pleasure as an exceptionally big sneeze.
The feeling I had when I got a jig to sound "jiggy", I would have likened to a big "O"; there's some passion I guess. But I like the idea of the exceptionally big sneeze or the gut bursting laugh.
"The stuff you see when you are going through the discussions here, is something you will rarely see in a proper session in this country."
You mean, catty remarks, idle gossip, and pointless defense of pointless statements? Show me a proper session, and I'll show you a miniature tableaux of nerves, anxiety, envy, lust, pride, and a host of additional sins. We're all imperfect, and more so when we hide behind a computer monitor talking with strangers. I love this music deeply, but I get very impatient with all of the petty squabbles and bent egos involved (mine included).
What is it about this music,
What is it about this music,
that produces such passions, seemingly becomes a religion and / or way of life?

ROFLMTO tulloch.
Can you keep your eyes open when playing?

Re: What is it about this music,
The thing about this music is that it is always there to inspire when you turn to it. If that is religion, so be it.

Re: What is it about this music,
Sometimes it's just excess rosin dust... I hate having to stop playing to scratch at my nose!

The stuff you see when you are going through the discussions here, is something you will rarely see in a proper session in this country.

Re: What is it about this music,
Yeah, Bren. Just like that (gotta love those glasses!) Maybe I aught to learn "Pretty Woman" jig style or would hornpipe or reel be more fitting?!
It's a relief Stefanpaz, to know that the discussions aren't reality so to speak. I guess it just the nature of the Discussion Beast.
Tulloch, for Gods sake don't clean the rosin dust if you "get that loving feeling" with the big sneeze!

Re: What is it about this music,
Didn't someone say that music was the only language in which you couldn't make catty remarks?

Just memories.
