Re: Backers v melodists, on the park near the broken swings, after school. Be there!

Help!I play bodhrán and accordion.
Some questions:
A) Does the accordion count as a "melody" instrument?
B)Is the bodhrán a backing instrument or a nuisance?
C)Which side do I choose?
D)Does any side actually want me? I'm pretty handy with a petrol bombarde

Re: Backers v melodists, on the park near the broken swings, after school. Be there!

Seeing as how I spend significant amounts of time in both camps, I reckon I'll save everyone a bit of trouble and just beat myself up.
Wow, I sure do throw a good left hook. Good thing I was fast enough to dodge it.

I'll let you know who wins.

Sorry, I was looking for the Bankers v Methodists thread. I's there another park near here?

Can I lead the attack for the melodists? (And can some one be my backup?)

Re: Backers v melodists, on the park near the broken swings, after school. Be there!

Conán,
Of course the accordion is a melody instrument; the fact that it can also back itself and others just means we get to pick sides.
But hell, most "backing" instruments except the Bodhran can be used to play melody (Just often aren't), There are only a couple that can really do both at the same time.

And the hurdygurdey, what camp does that feature in?

Hey Bill! How are you?

I think I'll just sit in the middle and arbitrate. It's a lot safer.

Let's have you, especially if Michael is leading the charge.

Re: Backers v melodists, on the park near the broken swings, after school. Be there!

Conán,
I am doing quite well thanks. Enjoyed hanging with you, Zina and the other Session.org people up in the Catskills... why else do you think I started posting here :). Well that and I can never turn down a good argument.

Well fortunately you are on the right side of the Atlantic; in America, I would not want to be a box player sitting in the middle... they might all decide they hate accordions more than either of the other :). Oh well, the life of a box player :). Oh why couldn't I have shown talent on the whistle when I tried it :).

Re: Backers v melodists, on the park near the broken swings, after school. Be there!

The hurdy-gurdy is a weapon of mass destruction, and should be treated accordingly with all groups agreeing to never use it on the others and to destroy all forms of it, but secretly hoard it just in case someone else still has one.

Re: Backers v melodists, on the park near the broken swings, after school. Be there!

On a related note, I got a bit bored with all this nonsense and went off looking for a more enlightened forum - I ended up on a "Taoist" forum (a philosophy that embraces humility, simplicity and open-ness - uh... I thought) and it turns out they're EXACTLY like we are. There's a Zina, a Will, and even a couple of Michael Gills. They bicker like alleycats.

The impression I got was that the battle was between the "tao as a rigid set of ideas and practices set forth by the ancient masters" camp and the "tao as a timeless philosophy accessible to everyone and open to free interpretation" camp.

Just goes to show there are two types of people in the world...

Can I just wait until the fight gets going and join up with the losing side or are we buying colour-coded bandanas ahead of time?

Re: Backers v melodists, on the park near the broken swings, after school. Be there!

Nah, there are three types of people in the world; those who can count and those who can't. :)

I think most forums end up having people with strong opinions confront each other. As long as people are willing to be respectful and not get into name calling or other bad behavior I see nothing wrong with this.

Me neither, dumbass.

Re: Backers v melodists, on the park near the broken swings, after school. Be there!

There are 10 kinds of people in the world: those who can count in binary and those who can't.

:-)

Sorry, couldn't resist the opportunity to insert a techy joke.

(Oh, and Kerri: please insert a smiley face when you call someone a dumbass... I know you're only kidding but those silly little emoticons serve to reinforce the humour and remove any doubt.) ;-)

Re: Backers v melodists, on the park near the broken swings, after school. Be there!

Well in this case it seemed pretty obviously a follow up to my comment about not calling people names and remaining civil... but perhaps some of the other stoopid ;) people on this list might miss it :).

Re: Backers v melodists, on the park near the broken swings, after school. Be there!

I'm willing to believe there was a me, and even a couple of Michael Gills, but no way there could be more than one Will Harmon!

# Posted on July 27th 2005 by Zina Lee

Re: Backers v melodists, on the park near the broken swings, after school. Be there!

Me, I was surprised *only* to find one Will. It is supposed to be a community of enlightened people, after all...

# Posted on July 27th 2005 by Kerri Brown

Re: Backers v melodists, on the park near the broken swings, after school. Be there!

There could only be one Will, surely. It'd be like having more than one Buddha running about loose.

Re: Backers v melodists, on the park near the broken swings, after school. Be there!

I may be the only hurdy-gurdy player on this forum.;->

While I generally don't bring it for specifically Irish events, I thought I'd show up a bit late, crank out a few quick Bourees , scare the h3ll out of everybody and retire for a pint.

I'm looking forward to it., hope you are too!!!

ACtually, bliss, that eyeball emoticon you stuck in there is kinda spooky. quick, we need a bunch more posts so that it scrolls up and stops staring at me! George Orwell would approve...

Well don't worry about me Conán, I raise the level of any argument I am in... or is that tempers? :)

There's no arguments here Conan, what are you talking about?
