Re: Shops in Baltimore or Boston for Octave Mandolins
I don't play stringed instruments, but since no one else has replied I will take a crack at it for Baltimore. Just outside of Baltimore (in a town called Catonsville) there is Appalachian Bluegrass. That seems to be where the Guitar, Banjo and Mandolin set in Baltimore go when they need stuff for their instrument.
Further to the south, near DC is house of Musical traditions... I know they stock some, but not sure how many.
Re: Shops in Baltimore or Boston for Octave Mandolins
In my experience, there really isn't any place in the Baltimore area that stocks any significant number of octave mandolins. If there is, I would like too know about the place! I frequent the two stores mentioned by "bill," and neither has much. I'm not sure that I have ever seen any OMs at Applalachian Bluegrass. They stock quite a number of mandolins and many guitars. Those instruments are the store's strengths. House of Musical Traditions (HMT) is very spotty. I have seen a few OMs over the years. Mostly Trinity College quality level. They have had more zouks than OMs, but again very few at a time (max. 3 different modelsat once) and this happened only once over the last 4 years. I was told that HMT has been struggling financially, so that likely limits how much stock they can carry.

bill,
I only put the quotes around your name to set it off from the surrounding text for clarity. I meant nothing by doing it. It is a habit that I have from writing in other contexts (where doing this sort of thing is common) and I forgot not to do it in this post.

Shops in Baltimore or Boston for Octave Mandolins
Does anyone know of music shops in either Boston or Baltimore that carry a selection of quality octave mandolins?

I hope I'm not breaking a TheSession rule by doing this, but I have one for sale that's pretty nice for Irish music. You can look at it at http://tallahassee.craigslist.org/msg/86640402.html.
And no, don't know anything about Boston or Balt'more music shops...

Try the Music Emporium in Lexington, MA. It's about a 15-20 min. drive north on Mass. Ave.

Not in Boston, but in Western Mass., Amherst, there's the Fretted Instrument Workshop. http://www.frettedinstrumentworkshop.com/. They might have something.
Those are two places I'd look.

For other Boston locations, also try Wood 'n Strings at 493 Mass Avenue in Arlington, and Sandy's Music, 896A Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge.
