I'm a rhythm player and a B/C box player, and just this weekend, I found out that I really like tunes in Cmajor and Aminor. Unfortunately, I only know of four tunes in those keys; April's Polka, My Maryanne, Return to Camden Town and Julia Delaney's. So if any of you could tell me some more, I'd be thankful.
I'd be more thankful still if someone could also tell me the names of some tunes that are easy starter tunes on the B/C box. I just got mine Sunday.
Try The Rooms of Dooagh: http://thesession.org/tunes/display.php/2277 There are some mistakes in the transcription. I think all the F notes should be F#. Anyway it's a beautiful Clare tune though not very common.
Please, sir, I know why he wants tunes in C and Am.....it's because he doesn't have to cross-key to play the tunes - in fact I have no idea how people cope with picking out tunes in D or G on a B/C box....what are the basses tuned to ? Do you even use the basses ?
At least I know where the notes are on my english concertina.
The obvious question is why not play all those D tunes a tone lower. But more interestingly there is a host of tunes that inhabit a strange area that is not striclty modal, for their key signiture is one sharp (F) and yet their tonal centre shifts between C and A. Rakish Paddy is a good example. But there are also tunes that inhabit this space that confuse futher by emplying an F nat accidental. Chicargo Reel for example
How about the Gravel Walks, you get both keys for the price of one and it is a cracking tune too, first three parts in A min, last part in C.
Another great tune in C is the Graf Spee as recorded by Martin Hayes on Under The Moon. In fact Martin Hayes plays quite a few tunes in C including the mighty P Joes Pachelbel Frolics which is notated in D Major on this site but played in C by Martin on Live In Seattle.
The Geese in the Bog is another one which is nice, some backers think it is in A minor but I always back it in C major, because if you look at the bloody notes of the first few bars they make up a C major triad! There are no full A minor triads at the start of either half of the tune, so you can certainly use A minor chords in the tune but it is definitely in C major.
As for purely A minor tunes, I mean there are so many the it's hard to know where to start. I like the Lilting Banshee and John Doherty's Reel which has an extra beat in it that often throws people, especially backers who don't know it!
Overall the best thing to do particularly when looking for C tunes is to go into the tune search, select C major and leave everything else blank, then you'll get a list of every C Major tune on this site!
I like tunes that can start off in a C style and then go into A minor...
like Mrs O sullivans, or I ner shall ween her, I guess Geese in the Bog caould be played that way too.

The Fisherman's Lilt: http://thesession.org/tunes/display.php/345 That's the only C major reel I can play on the D whistle. A classic!

And McIntyre's Fancy: http://thesession.org/tunes/display.php/819 Great modern composition without F notes.

“Rob, I thought Billy in the Lowground was a bluegrass tune,”
Or pre-bluegrass.

Re: Popular Cmaj. and Amin. tunes
I think many Clare musicians tend to play many C major-ish tunes. Check the tune listing of this recording: http://thesession.org/recordings/display.php/214

Go to the tunes section. In the rightmost dropdown box select the key of your choice.
Have fun.

And don't forget "Banks of Lough Gowna", a great jig when played in Am/C!

Re: Popular Cmaj. and Amin. tunes
If playing on one row is what you like, why not switch to C#/D? Lots more D and Bm tunes than C and Am tunes.

Re: Popular Cmaj. and Amin. tunes
It's not playing on one row I like, it's the sound of tunes in C. I just found out how nice a sound they have.
