We are off to ireland for the first time this year and really looking forward to it. Can you recomend places to hear traditional music? We are in Ennis, August 20/21, Innishmore, 22, Innisheer, 23, Connemara after(?)
Looking forward to your recomendations, Roger and Liz
The best place for trad music in Ireland in August is going to be the All-Ireland Fleadh, which takes place in Letterkenny Donegal. This takes place on the last weekend in August. A whole weekend well week really, as there are many sessions the week before, dedicated to Irish music. There is also a Trad festival the weekend before this in Kilty Clogher leitrim, called The Michael Shangley Festival.
Have to agree with Trad Girl that Letterkenny is the place to be towards the end of August. The Fleadh gets going from the Monday (22 August) with nightly sessions right through the week and into the weekend when the multitudes descend on the town. From a musician's point of view some of the best sessions happen during the week where it's easier to find a venue to play and also some great players from the Eigse (students and tutors) can be found in full flight.
In Ennis, go to Cruise's. (Next to the ruined Abbey) On Inisheer, go to Ned's (first right getting off the ferry, five minute walk). Can't help you with Inishmaan or the Connemara, sorry.
Inisheer also has a community hall that puts on a few good concerts over the summer. Ask a local (they are most chatty when you're getting a lift from one of them in their horse and buggy -otherwise half the time they'll say they don't know what you're talking about.) If there are any football or hurling matches on TV don't bother looking for music until at least an hour after the game.
Innishmore is very touristy. It's probably hard to find a place for good authentic traditional music.
In Ennis there are some more sessions going in other pubs. "Sessions" in Cruise's can be amplified gigs for toutists in August. Better to visit Custy's first and ask them which pub is the best during your stay there.
Slainte, they said "hear" traditional music, not "play" traditional music. The other sessions in town are near the point of collapse in terms of attendence, and therefore not very good listening.
I'm not sure if they play there during the summer, but I've seen Siobhan Peoples and John Kelly at Paddy Quinn's the last few times that I've been in Ennis on a Saturday night. Certainly worth checking out (in my opinion) although it does get a bit crowded.
Well, amplified gigs are generally not fun to listen to, you know.
I'm not disagreeing Cruise's is the best bet in Ennis. I think Siobhan Peoples and Murty Ryan have a mighty session with some other guys there every Friday all year round, not just in summer. I heard fabulous concertina player Padraig Rynne is now back in Ennis. I guess he regularly plays in the pub.
In Galway, Tigh Choili and Taaffe's are worth checking in the afternoon. The Quay's is also nice on weekends.
I don't remember Cruise's being amplified - if so it was tasteful. Probably for the best, since you'd have to be two feet from the table to hear it well if it wasn't.
