Re: Hows the Willie week going?

I was there and it was the best Willie Week I've had, mainly thanks to the best seisiún I've ever been in, namely the Thursday night seisiún in the Crosses of anagh, now that seisiún will take some beating :-)

Re: Hows the Willie week going?

I was there. Class numbers seem to be up, the town seemed quieter but the sessions where pure quality!!!! Although usually found in The Central most nights, great music stretched out to Lahinch, Liscanor etc. Definately my best Willie Week too!!!!!!!

Re: Hows the Willie week going?

The town was definitely quieter which was probably why it was better than more recent years. I thought it would be less good with some pubs closed, but it proved to be the opposite. another great seisiún, which I definitely didn't play in featured Sean Ryan, Jackie Daly and alec Finn.

Re: Hows the Willie week going?

Unfortunately I could only make the Friday. It seemed very like other years with sessions in most pubs during the day and each one having its own unique characteristics. For example the one on the Ennis Rd was as usual packed out with crowds outside seemingly trying to climb in through the windows! The Malbay Hotel session was predominantly string oriented with bouzoukis, guitars and banjos while Hillerys had a smaller but very high quality senior session (East Clare box player, Seamus Bugler was one of the musicians I recognised). After wandering up and down the town two or three times (as you do!) I settled for the Central Hotel where there was a great group (possibly 20) of musicians - young and old - hammering out tunes for the whole of the day and late into the evening. We also had some songs (thanks to Henry McDonald on guitar) and a hilarious recitation "Cod Liver Oil" from one of the local ladies. Roll on next year - why am I saying that, we've still got the Fleadh, the Ennis Trad Fest, Fleadh Nua and countless other events before then!

Re: Hows the Willie week going?

Bannerman, i sat through the same Central session and that recitation was funny, especially the faces peering through the window, wondering what was happening!!! The brilliant twosome of Tom (banjo) and PJ (bodhran) were great! Henry sang beautifully and all the musicians were superb!! great night altogether!!

Re: Hows the Willie week going?

Greetings Paul - glad to know that I got to play with someone else off the site although I didn't know it at the time! Were you sitting next to Henry as I recall a bodhrán in that area ? - a very good young box player took Henry's place when he left. As regards the recitation the actions were something else, especially the horse riding movements - I can imagine people outside the window wondering what on earth must have been going on!

Re: Hows the Willie week going?

I had the joy of sitting in the next section of seats facing the window and creeking my neck round to watch all the musicians at work. There were two bodhrans, one of which was quite loud and beside me, therefore i didn't play but enjoyed the craic!!!! Sometimes it does no harm at all to sit back and listen!!!

Re: Hows the Willie week going?

i spent most of the week sessions in faheys and michael a's. amazin.
hard work gettin up every morning to do the classes but joe doyle has a great sense of patience. went to a couple of the recitals- mickey dunne, tom clarke and peter browne. kickin myself that i missed the pipn concert on the wednesday but was havin fierce craic at the time. kept bumpin into the actor martin gleeson(the general, braveheart etc,) apparently he plays fiddle!!
met mickie smith who was just after arrivin back from his californian tour and i got his new cd-"the wild keys". All in all had a great time but could see it gettin crowdy(rowdy) by the friday. Actually witnessed a fight in faheys frriday night unfortunately(first time ever) so thought it was time to bale out on the satyrday afternoon(just as the sun decided to make an appearance-typical)
roll on next year.

Re: Hows the Willie week going?

Are you sure the actor wasn't Brendan Gleeson? He played the fiddle in the "Michael Collins" film.

Thanks very much to the people who replyed to me about the Willie Clancey week

I would just like to say thanks alot to the people who replyed to me about the Willie Clancey Week. I now believe that I was mistaken for me da. Im happy to hear that Jim posted a little note saying that I am my Das son. My name is Colm. Good man Jimbo. I heard a great saying that it is great that the Willie week is better than saying week Willie. Somebody posted it on the site. I found it very funny indeed and I laughed out loud when I read it. Im in Australia at the moment and Im playing music to my hearts content. Im travelling up the east coast and Im loving it to bits. I've found a few great musicians and they have helped me out on finding sessions all the way up the coast. I have composed four tunes myself and they are all great. Right until next time, take care and keep the music going always.

Having gone up the East coast you might try coming down the West coast even though there's a bit of land in between. The natives are friendly in WA.
Give us a shout if you make it to Perth.
