Hi, I'm a student from Germany interested in the Irish Revival of the 1890s. Back then the Gaelic League and associations such as the GAA seem to have encouraged the playing of trad. music and Irish customs. I was just wondering if the Gaelic League still organizes cultural events, or if any ITM-players are associated with it these days.
Is there still a spirit of cultural revivalism in Ireland or do you just play the music for the fun of it? Is it a mixture of both? I adore ITM and play it myself at a local session, but it's mostly for the dorian-sound of it that I like it, I guess...
The Gaelic League is now better known as Conrdh na Gaeilge; no-one really uses the term Gaelic League any more except in a historical sense.
They organise the Oireachtas competition which encompasses singing as well as instrumental music.

The other big organisation which promotes Irish music is Comhaltas Ceoilteoirí Eireann
