Re: Change of Dates for Best Trad Session Competition Festival SEPT 05
I've seen this competition advertise before but it seems a bit strange to me. Surely, a session isn't just a group of musicians playing together. What makes a good session is surely also dependent on the location, pub environment, beer (good, bad, free etc), the atmosphere of the premises and whether the punters are a help or hindrance. Also, musicians will "drop in" or "out" as the evening progresses. There's no set programme either and the choice of music is usually a spontaneous thing. It might be great music and a lot of fun but I don't see how you can call it a session.
Unless, of course, the meaning doesn't come over very well in the translation but I'm sure I saw this advertised as a "best pub session" competition last year but it might have been a different one.

In reply to Guernsey Pete, of course you can bring your publican/landlord also - that's the whole spirit of it. Last year we had musicians arriving on buses with not only their publican but also large numbers of their own locals - I guess they wanted to create the same atmosphere that they were used to playing in !!
In some cases, the publican sponsored the musicians' entry fee and rounded up the locals locals for moral support. These publicans gained some really good loyalty points from the event regardless of where they finished.

Can you bring over the grumpy landlord and a few of the pub regulars as well, to prove it really is the best ?

Hi Fern,
Yes, come on over from the US. Everyone is welcome.
We may have one New York entry this year already, so the more the merrier.
All musicians will get subsidised accommodation and we'll even get you picked up from Shannon Airport.
If you email me directly eileen.hassett@ddm.ie , I can send you and entry form and more details.
Eileen
