I'm devastated to have to tell board members that Joe was killed, along with Tyneside jazz musician Keith Morris by a hit and run driver on Newcastle's Westgate Road yesterday.
Keith was killed instantly and Joe was taken to hospital where all efforts to save his life were unsuccesful and he died this morning.
Very, very sorry to hear this. The "Old Ropes" played Aberdeen Folk Club several times in the 80s/early 90s. I last saw them a few years ago at Stonehaven Festival, and in fact they are booked to appear at this year's event in a few weeks time.
You have to be a very good musician in the first place to be funny with the music, and the "Old Rope String Band" were hilarious. What a tragedy. My condolences to Joe's friends and family.
Truly devastating news - I was looking forward to the session this weekend, but now there'll be a big black cloud over it.
I was lucky to see the Ropes over on the Isle Of Man last year, and not only were they brilliant, but they turned up at the session later that evening, and sat right next to me. Fantastic musicians and true gentlemen. Joe will be sorely missed.
Hi Folks
I just got back from Brittany from my holidays and i was shocked to hear of the death of Joe Scourfield of the Old Rope String Band .I was very disappointed to see or not to see many comments about his death on the session.org as he was one of the greatest musical genious's i have ever had pleasure of watching on video and i would have loved to have seen them live.
I was playing music with some musicians from Newcastle at the weekend and they were discussing the funeral of which you can view photos on the old rope string band website and they were saying they hoped this would not be a new trend to see who could have the biggest funeral
My sympathys to all Joe's Family and friends
There are some coments here if you want to read them Sober Driver. Personally I can't recall hearing his music, or that of Kevin Morris either, so am not the best person to comment but judging on the outpouring of sympathy on this, and other sites, I am sure they will be sorely missed. My syymathies to all who knew them.
He was a friend of geoff - the box player who goes to the Blythe - friend of Brians. He went to the funeral. Victim of a hit and run driver - all very sad.

This is sad news. I saw The Old Ropes many times at festivals and they were so funny and clever too.

Re: Joe Scurfield of the Old Rope String Band
I had a video of The Old Rope and String band from my father, it's brilliant. R.I.P Joe.
By the way Kenny, are you Kenny Hadden? My dad(Rory Allardice) said that he and himself were buddies in Aberdeen University and sessions and stuff.

Sad to think I'll never see him perform again. Still play one of his tunes - "Reel Madrid". He was a true genius.
