As a player of more than one instrument (although alas not the pipes) I sometimes get a bit stumped as to how to define myself if asked. Fiddler or kazoo player? How do I decide? Anyone got any ideas or is this one of those hierarchical questions again?
I think that is just fence sitting Dark Raven. Would any of those take preference if you thought that answering 'multiistrumentalist' would generate blank looks or, worse, a request to play one!!
I say fiddle if I'm talking to trad musicians, guitar if I'm talking to songwriters, hammered dulcimer if I'm trying to impress other fiddle / guitar players, and bodhran if I'm in confession.
There is a definite heirarchi (sp?) of instruments, and I fear that the kazoo does not carry much kudos, so I might refrain from mentioning it on polite occasions. However, there are times, such as a rendition of "Mama don't allow"' or "Coney Island washboard roundelay"' or "San Francisco Bay Blues"' where the use of a kazoo is essential, and the performance will be diminished by its absence.
Nevertheless, I would caution you that, rather as the definition of a gentleman is "A person who knows how to play the bagpipes, but doesn't", similarly a lady might be described with reference to the kazoo........
Depending on mood, maybe? This week I am a kazooist.
Or, location? Here, I am a fiddler.
I sometimes feel like a singer (this is really only the strong want for good singing skills, putting me under the delusion that I actually am a singer. This feeling usually vanishes when I open my mouth.), but can not, under any circumstance, claim to be one....
Thanks you guys. Am I wiser? Well I like the idea of a location based answer.......
A multi-istrumentalist sounds a little like you are playing everything together so maybe the truthful answer is a serial instrumentalist......but I hope this is not a criminal offence!!
I usually reply "mostly I play guitar." That leaves the door open to the fact that I play more instruments without having to recite a list. And it puts the emphasis on what I play the best. But that answer doesn't work so good if you play more than one instrument equally well. "Jack of all trades and master of none" always works as an answer, and is usually true of those who muck about on multiple instruments (although I do have a friend that comes very close to being the best fiddler, best accordion player and best whistler in the state, and he is humble to boot--a remarkable man).
hmmm...I think somebody watched Darkwing Duck a few times too many.
And what instrument would you be least mortified to be compelled to prove your competency with ?
Other than the kazoo. Anything that can be approximated with a comb and toilet paper would probably require some really cool deliverables to be considered a primary instrument.
What am I?

Two here.
I'm semi-ok at Flute.
I'm real good at being a hammered bodhranist. Then again most people are.

Re: What am I?
What you are is what you want to be.
What you don't want to be, is a fake.
That hurts, a lot, so be who you are,
And you'll earn my respect.

Re: What am I?
I am the gum that sticks to the shoe of people who insist on singing at sessions...
I am the candle that lights the evil bodhran bonfire...
I am the goop that drips from the flute into the fiddler of doom's Guinness...
I am... FluteMan!
Marvel how I wear my underpants on the outside. Gasp as you hear my almost in tune chromatic runs on a keyless six-hole!
Gape in awe as you witness unthinkable key changes in the eight-tune sets I dare to lead!
No, seriously it's fine... go ahead and gape. Really. I'm used to it.
