I'm just curious--is there a typical number of times folks will play a tune in a session before going to the next tune or elsewhere? My experience is that most 32 bar tunes are played about 3 times, tho' it may depend on how tired everyone is, or how well lubricated.
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
3 by default. Sometimes 4 if nobody looks at anyone else. Sometimes more if someone says "again!". Sometimes 2 but I find that annoying. It's not enough to get into the tune.
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
If its a brilliant tune I like to play it 4 or 5 tunes, an average tune 3. Anyone who changes after two (unless the tune is awful) i will bop them on the head with my bow.
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
You must admit it tho - when someone plays a tune twice through its really annoying...especially if its a cracker of a tune. And if its a horrible tune, then it shouldnt have been started in the first place
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
Usually three times in Irish Sessions, twice in Scottish sessions although in some "oldtimers" Scottish sessions it might just be once. The latter was/is the practice with some Scottish Dance and Ceilidh Bands where they might start with the original tune of a dance set, play a few more and return to the original. This has carried over to their sessions.
Quite often in Irish sessions, you might get one tune played several times, e.g. 4 or 5. I do this myself sometimes if I get away with it. It's good for building up "a groove" and it's great to to hear all the instruments eventually "joining in" as they remember how it goes.....as opposed to picking it up on the fly or"noodling" Jack, although many do that too.
Tunes with 5 or 6 six parts maybe shouldn't be played quite as often and slow airs might drag if played more than a couple of times but the general rules are as above.
Re: How many dozen times do you play a tune in a session
Surely it depends on how many tunes you have got lined up after this one. If you have got six or seven decent tunes lined up, why not play them twice through?
Just as preference, I play twice through in session (three or four if I am teaching a new tune to the others). In the band, it is once through a tune, finally returning to the original (well it is a Scottish band).
If anyone starts a tune, plays it seven times then stops, simply because they cannot string two tunes together, I will bop them on the head with my accordion (and it is bloody heavy).
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
I think 6 or 7 tunes in a long string is a waste of impact. 3 tunes, 3 times each, nice and compact, that's the way they sound their best. All this rushing through once or twice and then onto the next tune is rubbish, well, for an Irish session anyway. If anyone does that, I will ram my bouzouki down their throat (and it's quite fat with sharp bits on where I haven't bothered trimming the string ends).
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
In "mixed" sessions, I've heard singers comment that whereas they only get one song we have sets of 3 or 4 tunes. They also complain if a few of us are playing at the same time. They think we are getting an extra turn!!
So, sometimes, I'll pick only one tune, a 6 parter and play it about 4 or 5 times just for spite. After all, they choose the ballads with most verses.
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
Quite often, this "mixture" is all you can get in some areas and at certain festivals.
That's why all tune sessions are so precious to me (and us). So, when one is established you don't want it to be hijacked!
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
If I start a tune and no one's joining in, I might move on after twice.
And someone will say "I was just getting into that".
Also I must make a note to do that if I ever get to Dow's session.
My metal-bodied mando will beat his flimsy wooden "bouzouki" any day.
What about those 6 part pipe tunes where each part is a subtle variation of the other and no one really knows where they are? You're getting on to the 6th variation and everyone else is going round for the third time on parts 1 & 2.
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
3 tunes 3 times each would seem to be the consensus. I'd also agree with some of the comments about long tunes (4 parts or more) where twice might be enough - we have a set with the Lark in the Morning followed by Humours of Ennistymon and finishing with the Wandering Minstrel where the 3 times rule calls for an awful lot of stamina!
I don't think single reels (4 bars repeated in each part such as Drowsie Maggie, Glass of Beer, Boyne Hunt, Rolling in the Ryegrass, etc) have been mentioned yet. Normally most of the sessions play these 4 times over.
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
Bren,
It's like that with pipe marches sometimes. Many of your average session goers just don't know them well enough. I know quite a few but there's loads of them where I still "bluff" my way through the variations. Actually, if you play parts one and two, it often fits in ok.
You'd think "The Barren Rocks of Aden" would be easy but everyone plays it differently. I have a nice four part version but it often just gets played AB AB (sometimes as a polka!). Sometimes, it's ABC ABC and even more confusingly AB AC!!
What a problem with such an easy tune!
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
Two part jigs and reels, generally three times each. Two part hornpipes, or jigs and reels with three or more parts, generally twice. Single reels, at least four. Hardly ever less repeats than that, but sometimes more. For some reason (maybe this is subjective), the Butterfly always gets repeated at least one time too many for my tastes. And sometimes, some of us decided to play a different number of A or B parts at random, just to keep the rest of us on our toes!!!!!!!
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
More than 3 times is boring. I get more enjoyment with shorter doses. If someone insists on playing the tune more than that then I have to amuse myself by trying variations.
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
I like to sometimes start the next reel half a bar in, especially if it's really cooking. The tune players catch on quickly and it sometimes has the tendancy to get the strummers to play upside down; up down up down instead of down up down up. Great for a funky change
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
We usually play until we get a signal from each other to change. On average it's 3 times, but it can easily go to 4 or 5 depending on how much fun it is to play. People who change after 2 or automatically change at 3 without looking around to check with the gang aren't having enough fun if you ask me.
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
Same as above an average of three times. We normally change when the person who starts the tune gives the nod, I love it when a tune is so enjoyable that someone shouts again and off we go.
I hate it when a tune is is being played and it is obvious to everyone that nobody is sure of it and instead of stopping after two times with some dignity left some nutter will head off into a third round... 3 times is not carved in stone and people should have the sense to know when to quit!!
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
AAAAAAAAAaaaaaaah!!!
It really niffs me if im in a session and the people playing imediately change tune after only 2 of 3 times around.
Musicians who are worth their salt dont tend to stick to any rule and play a tune until THEY'RE READY and then change.this can take like 10 times around or more. you cant get into a tune if you only play it a couple of times n get a buzz off the tune and the other musicians really until youve played it a good few times.
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session

Before reading this thread, if anyone had asked me to guess whether a person who wants to play tune 10 times had ever been to a session in their lives, I would have said no. But now I'm reading the comments of a musician who likes playing tunes 10 times, and who - I'm guessing - has been to a session before. Interesting...
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session

Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
I've played in quite a few sessions where a great tune will be played 5 or 6 times, if only to give the musicians present a chance to squeeze in all of their variations. Sometimes it works fine, other times...
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
only messin. they do exist though. (not the 20 and 30 times one though). Deffinitely theres a deadly buzz in a session when the musicians get into a tune a dozen or so times around. it doesnt get boring if you're doin enough with a tune.
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
Just keep on going until you hear a tune played 20 times.
It's people like Phiddle to blame for those people who think that all Irish music sounds the same.
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
At the sessions I go to in Bristol, usually 2 or 3 times. I prefer 3, unless it's a polka played at dirge speed (in which case the A-part, once, without repeats, is quite enough). My tune workshop teacher tells me that in Donegal it's not unusual to play a tune 6 or 7 times straight off. At the other end of the scale, it was apparently common practice many years ago at sessions to play a tune once through only - I was told this by someone at the Mrs Crotty Festival in Clare last year.
Playing for set dancing is a bit different, the tunes are chosen to fit a dance of a particular number of bars, so you can get odd combinations of tunes. Although the dancers are naturally more interested in the rhythmic aspects of the tunes the musicians generally try to fit tunes together to make things more interesting. It doesn't necessarily always work out like that. I remember one set dance ceili where the Ballyvourney (a fast slide) was about to start. We (an ad hoc band) couldn't agree on a set of tunes, so we got round the problem by playing the Brosna slide until the dancing stopped. I lost count of the number of times we played that tune for the dance, but it must have been at least a dozen. The Brosna is a tune I can now play on autopilot anytime, anywhere, at any speed

Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
Okay ive bin gone for a day r so doin exams but now ill be serious.
2 or 3 three times in a session is not enough. Cant stand the sound of a session where the musicians change tune like that too early. Usually in any session i'm in its always at least 5 as a rule but no-one really counts. people just naturally look at each other to change after that long.
If a tunes gettin really good then why go out of it. Keep it goin for 8 or 10 or whatever.
Dow, i wasnt on the net in the last day r 2 and i'm not on it constantly so i couldnt reply, but i'm from kildare and i play in Dublin, Kilkenny Kildare and elsewhere.
And no, it never gets monotenous or sounds the same. as i already said, any musician who is worth their salt doesn't just play a tune 2 or 3 times in a session.
Re: How many times do you play a tune in a session
just play the tunes until you think it's time to change!! there are no specific rules, it doesnt really matter if you play it three or thirty times (although 30 would get a bit annoying) but whenever you feel it's time to change. thats what i do and it works!!

"played about 3 times" - what degree of error are we allowed by the word "about"? Plus or minus 1? 2? 3? more?
Could we end up with a tune being played a negative number of times?
